Steam and Discord moderation

If DJ Orwell or infernovia show up in the Discord again, please ban them immediately with no discussion. DJ left and I kicked infern, so they can't be banned before they try to reenter the server, and that's why I can't do it myself right now. I don't want to see or talk to these people ever again.

Actually, I managed to ban them by scrolling up and clicking on their usernames in chat, so we are all good. All peaceful again until the next time someone decides to act in a flagrantly assholic manner.

Moderation guidelines.

STEAM
The only thing you can do there is kick people from the chatroom, but since we never use the chatroom there, there's nothing for you to do. It's a symbolic role; the most you'll ever have to do is chat with someone who messages you because they see you in the moderator group and want to ask a question about the site or how the clan works. So just answer their question in a polite, human manner.

DISCORD
Here you have two powers: to kick people from the server, and to ban them. And of course the ban should be reserved for trolls and spammers in extreme kinds of situations. If there is no urgent need to ban someone, just leave things as they are and I will make the call when I get online. In the case of just a disrespectful chatty guest, kick them twice before banning them the third time. Never ban someone outright, unless they are posting child porn or something. That's the reason I gave people this power, not so they can power-trip by banning random guests who join the server to check it out, as infernovia did.

Beyond that, it's just common sense that everyone in the Discord should have, members as well as moderators. At least one of us should say hello to a new guest, when we see them logging on, and at least one of us should ask that guest whether they are a subscriber, and answer whatever questions they might have. If they are interested in joining the clan, give them this link which explains who we are, what we play, and how to join us: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/insomniacult

From the chat:

I wrote:It's so easy to tell the difference between well-meaning moderators and ill-meaning ones
I learned to do that in the years before I made Insomnia
The well-meaning moderator wants to help people
That's why he became a moderator
He wants to help users solve their issues, and the site owner to maintain a well-run community
The ill-meaning moderator just wants to use his buttons
It's extremely easy to see who is who

From the chat:

I wrote:@everyone From now on, the main purpose of the chat is to set up games with people
You can talk about what you like and what you don't, but in brief, and with a view to playing one of those games soon
Any more in-depth discussion goes in the forum
You can link OMG INCREDIBLE GAME NEWS
once in a while
but, again, we have a news forum for that
Above all, you can link game sales
And you can have the occasional off topic chat
But, at least as far as gaming is concerned, when the disussion starts going deep, I want someone to pop up and say "Take it to the forum, please"
So that's all I had to say about that

I wrote:I think this will help everyone who is addicted to discord
And also improve the overall quality, due to the higher energy expenditure required to post in the forum

I wrote:My dream for Discord is for a day to come when I can go online and see half a dozen people with the red LOOKING TO PLAY status
That is my goal
When I achieve it I'll be in heaven
This shitty real-time discussion of games with people who don't care enough about their own views to compose them in their minds and post them properly is worthless to me
It's just time wasted that could be used to play a game

A note on banning people from the Discord, in the unlikely case you might have to do that while I am not there.

The default option the app gives you is to delete the banned user's posts from the last 24 hours, but you shouldn't do that. Make sure you pick the option to not delete anything instead, both in order to preserve the integrity of the chatlog, and so that I can review what the hell happened and decide whether the user deserves a second chance.

Discord now allows you to give people you kick a reason for kicking them, so copy-paste this text into the reason box when you kick someone:

Thanks for visiting Insomnia's Discord server. Please note however that this is a members-only area. If you are a member, rejoin the server and tell a moderator (the yellow guys) your forum name. If you are not a member, and want to join, visit this link to subscribe and join us: http://culture.vg/subscribe.html

Updated moderation rules and guidelines from Discord:

icycalm wrote:I thought up a policy that might dramatically increase the size of the clan
Clan members get free lifetime subscription to the site(edited)
But they have to be valuable members that play a lot
So applicants join the Steam group and Discord, and only after several weeks of trying them out and making sure they are legit cool people who play a lot of games with us and co-operate well do I give them access to the site
Of course, this will decrease site revenues, but I hope that with the work I am doing on Steam and with the help of some people here it won't be an issue
I think I will try it out soon
Okay, it's on the frontpage
@Hatchet Men be sure to ask new people if they are here to join the clan from now on
If they say yes, tell them the games we are playing and ask them to buy some of them and start playing with us as soon as they can

Many of the initial ones to join will just be scumbags who want to lurk and read the Discord, and we will weed them out by demanding that they play with us asap
After about a week of them not playing anything, I will kick them
Leave that kicking to me though
I will actually ban them, not merely kick them, because of their attempt to deceive us
But I hope that in the long run we'll net a few good people too
Of course people who pay will still be welcome to be in the clan and sit on the Discord without playing anything with us
I will see if I can divide the Steam group into two categories: the actual players, and everyone else
Also, it's okay if players take some time off now and then
As long as they have played with us for an extended period AT SOME POINT, and we've deemed them legit gamers, they can stay on in the clan and the site for free
If an admin is not on when someone joins, whoever is here and available to chat should talk to the newcomer

So far this policy has not yielded a single new member, only half a dozen morons who logged on without saying a thing, and a retard who thinks "Dell" is a PC spec. So I'll stick to it for a couple of weeks, and if we still have nothing to show for it by then, I'll cancel it.

It makes sense, in hindsight, why it wouldn't be effective. Anyone who has a decent computer and can afford to buy new games to play with us would not think twice about spending 30 euros to join the clan. Whoever has an issue with that pitiful amount of money would be a terrible gaming partner.

Nevertheless, I advertised the policy on the frontpage, so I will stick with it for a couple more weeks at least.
