Tom Phillips wrote:Beyond Good & Evil 2 is in an "active creation stage", creator Michel Ancel has confirmed, but reiterated the game was unlikely to launch during the current console generation.

"We won't make promises that we can't keep," Ancel said in a interview (translated by NeoGAF) conducted at the end of last year. "We are in an active creation stage and at this moment we are only focusing on the game and making it the best game that we can."

A decision to focus on a specific console "just distracts us from that objective", Ancel continued. "I can say that it's a very ambitious game and we need some tech to achieve that ambition."

"We focus on the game. We create it first, then we'll see what can run it. We don't say 2013 because we don't know when it will come."

Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced back in 2008. Leaked in-game footage showed a third-person parkour sequence similar to DICE's Mirror's Edge. But DICE's first-person free-runner is definitely not an influence on Beyond Good & Evil 2, Ancel assured.

"We had this concept even before Mirror's Edge launched. And we have a different approach to the first person perspective that Mirror's Edge has. Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed are closer to what we have in mind with the control of the character in a third person perspective.

"We use a very dynamic camera that shakes a lot during the action to add life to the camera giving the impression of an action news cover team following Jade. Maybe that could be similar to Mirror's Edge but the game itself is very different," Ancel concluded.

Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel has started his own studio.

Dubbed Wild Sheep Studio, the new Montpellier-based indie outfit consists of 13 staffers and is working on an original game to be announced soon.

Ancel will remain at Ubisoft, however.

"We are fortunate to have some of the industry's finest talents, including Michel Ancel, working with us at our studio," said managing director of Ubisoft's Annecy, Paris and Montpellier studios, Xavier Poix in a statement to Eurogamer. "In addition to spending some of his time on this new venture, Michel is leading the creative development of select projects at Ubisoft Montpellier, including an extremely ambitious new title that is very close to his and the team's heart."

That last sentence is certainly tantalising to fans of Beyond Good & Evil since its sequel has been lost in limbo for ages, though Ubisoft has ensured everyone off and on that it's been in development since a teaser trailer surfaced in 2008.

When pressed for comment about this in light of recent events, Ubisoft confirmed to Eurogamer that the Rayman creator is in fact working on a Beyond Good & Evil sequel. Here's the exact statement the publisher offered on the matter:

"In many ways, BG&E is an inimitable game - it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier's past and future games. It's still far too early to give many details about this new title, but what we can say is that while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they're developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game. The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we'll have more to share later, as it progresses."

That certainly sounds promising! Then again, Ancel and Ubisoft have been teasing this thing for over six years, so it's not 100 per cent certain that this is his next game. He might just be tinkering away at it a little at a time while pursuing other projects. Guess we'll see it when pigs fly, eh?

Tyler Wilde wrote:After the long awaited cinematic reveal of Beyond Good & Evil 2 at the Ubisoft conference today, series lead Michel Ancel joined Twitch to chat about the game during the E3 livestream. Ancel didn't go into too many specifics, but the scope of the game did come up.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a prequel. "It's really connected to the first game," said Ancel. And it's meant to be huge.

"We did not want to reveal anything before today because we wanted to make sure that the technology would be—you know, you can dream big, but if you don't have any way to make the game of your dreams, then you can talk for hours and hours and hours and then?" Ancel said.

"So we waited for three years just working on the technology, so that now you can really travel across space, planets. But not empty planets. Or not empty, generated, whatever planets. Real planets with cities, logical connection between the cities. And even all the natural events that you could have on these kind of planets, gravity, all the moons, and all these things. We needed to make sure, before coming here today, making sure that we will deliver the game."

It sounds like a ton of literal world building has gone into BG&E2, with multiple cities across multiple planets. As for how representative the CG trailer is of the gameplay, Ancel says their technology allows for what we saw at least in concept, if not with the same cinematic direction.

"You can get out of the Chinese restaurant, jump into your spaceship, go across the atmosphere, and go into your giant spaceship, and then change the planet," Ancel said. "And all this does no loading, and you can be attacked whenever it's happening. It's like GTA but in space, in three dimensions."
