Servers (hardware and software)

Post anything related to server hardware and software here.

icy brought up setting up a server for custom Rust games on Discord, so I did a little research and found out some solutions we could use to accomplish this. Feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong, I'm not well versed in this stuff.

Managed Game Servers:
This is the quickest, cheapest, and most convenient option. Essentially, a single dedicated server is running a single game, running multiple virtual servers, and sharing the same resources of the single server. This means that performance could drop if there's too many people on the server or if someone's game server has priority over another, so performance could vary from shitty to good. You're pretty much at the whim of the service provider since they will be doing the heavy lifting to set it up.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS)/Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS):
A bit more costly, but it has better performance and reliability. It's a virtual machine that has resources allocated to it through cloud computing. There's more freedom to set it up how you want, but it takes a bit more technical knowledge to get it running. We've been using Amazon's service to play Planetary Annihilation.

Dedicated Server:
The ultimate solution. Physical hardware that you can customize and manage that is solely dedicated to you. Much more costly than the two solutions above. The dream solution would be something you could run out of your own home/arcade/castle (check Discord for the arcade/castle reference, lol).

For the Rust session this Saturday, I'm leaning towards NFO. There's a two-day trial and it had some recommendations from Rust admins on reddit.

Does the two-day trial begin when you register on their website, or when you actually start playing?

Tell me when I have to do something and where I have to go to do it and I'll do it. In the meantime I am working in getting a basic blog set up. I will make a new subforum for it like we have with Cosmic War.

They don't specify when it starts, it might notify you when you have to confirm the order. They mention the following on their TOS.

It is important to note that NFO offers a free trial for new customers of many services; customers are notified whether a specific order qualifies for the trial on the order confirmation/review page.

Put in the order anytime on Friday, I don't know how long it will take for them to set it up and you may want to leave some time for yourself to fiddle around with the settings before the start time on Saturday.

When you place the order, on game type, you may want to select the options that say "[nav disabled]". When Facepunch implemented their new AI navigation system, they didn't optimize its performance and NFO is charging more for it enabled.

Also, when the server is up. You should check out some of the server mods. You'll be able to install a Rust mod called Oxide through NFO's server control panel.

Here's an interesting plugin for it: http://oxidemod.org/plugins/factions.1919/

It sounds like it could help us set up teams and keep track of territory.

Continued from here: http://culture.vg/forum/topic?t=5744

I wrote:In this thread we will be discussing issues pertaining to the running of our dedicated server for PA, but the financing of the server will be covered in the Online thread, for reasons I have explained there: http://culture.vg/forum/topic?t=5743

Now, that server will take us some time to acquire, so until then we will be using Amazon's most expensive virtual server at $2/hour, for the next few days, and then my desktop computer for free once I set it up in the coming week. recoil has already sent me detailed guides on how to get the Amazon server running, which I did yesterday and will do again in about an hour for Clan Wars #1, and basically the entire weekend, so what remains to be discussed here, for the time being, is how the hell do I turn my desktop into a server. I will need to be running Linux I guess? And which version? I would prefer SteamOS, but if that's going to create trouble, I'll use whichever stupid version will minimize it.

My desktop has the following hard drives, all empty at the moment:

1x 256GB SSD
1x 1TB HDD
2x 4TB HDD

Should I install Linux in a partition of the SSD, or can I just make the 1TB HDD a Linux boot disk, which I would prefer to do, because I hate partitions. Will not using the SDD impact server performance for our (strictly gaming) purposes?

I will need detailed Complete Idiot's guides to installing Linux and the server software and running the server, and I am hoping recoil can provide these, but feel free to help out in any way you can by posting in this thread.

P.S. Once I have my server running well, we should also set up dan's to compare. dan is free to start setting up his whenever he wants, and post updates here, and we'll try PA on it whenever he has a couple of hours at least to play and several of us are on to stress test it.
