The intro was in good taste, but I am not sold on the play footage, from either aesthetic or mechanical perspectives. It only shows a couple seconds of it though, so I would need to see more.

Behind The Gameplay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF-rMNY0fBk

This is the greatest developer video I have ever seen, an entire universe away from the "rogue-lite" "soulslike" "metroidvania" "with RPG aspects" buzzword-collecting toxic attitude of "indie" garbage peddlers. I rarely pay attention to developer interviews or "behind the scenes" videos, because most developers function unconsciously and can barely understand why they do the things they do, let alone explain them to anyone. But this guy has a clinical understanding of every facet of game development, from the art, the music, the mechanics, pacing, how to deal with sequels or fan expectations, iteration... It's incredible. He gives a complete course in game design in a few minutes. (Retro game design at any rate, obviously we are not talking about Star Citizen or Humankind here.)

Another point to note is that all the composers are Japanese. It's not like the usual case where a Western dev hires Yuzo Koshiro for one track, and all the rest are made by Westerners. Watch the video below to get an idea of how much thought has gone into the music.

Behind the Tracks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-1e1cbiKpg

Another is the quality and variety of the stages, now that they have shown many of them. They are fantastic and definitely attractive enough to make the clear worth going for. But what really seals the deal is the animations that are fighting-game worthy. The biggest tell is how the protagonist's fist flames up into the 4 in all the trailers. That's such a slick, gorgeous effect that only a real master could conceive, let alone execute. And of course the advanced mechanics with all the bouncing of enemies etc. shine in all the trailers. These guys have top-level talent and the director knows exactly what he's doing and could teach a university course on it. If this game somehow fails it will be extraordinary. It will probably be the best 2D beat 'em up since the '90s. Which, on the one hand, isn't exactly a tall order because I can't name a single modern game in the genre worth a crap, but for precisely that reason maybe it is a tall order, since no one has achieved it in decades.

P.S. Yeah, some of the characters' faces could use work, especially the ladies', but hey, Western artists, whatcha gonna do about it. Axel at least looks good, and otherwise the character design is on point, so I am not gonna be too fussy here. I am very happy with the game's look, and was pleasantly surprised by some details while checking out the videos, like the shirtless bro fighting with his hands in his pockets and so on. Lots of thought has gone into this. The animations of the guitar chick are downright inspired and you can't even make our her face during the action. (Check the Gamescom play footage linked at the bottom.)

Fourth character revealed.

Trailer includes great new music track. Also, I think there's space left between the four characters in the updated title screen for a fifth unveil. Probably Asian.

Then again maybe not. Maybe they want the number of characters to be the same as the title number.

Woah DLC upcoming with a bunch of new playable characters, moves, weapons and music tracks: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1585 ... Nightmare/

Good thing we didn't play the game too much before. Should be a riot with all the new stuff. No release date yet. Check all the promotional videos on the page. Very slick. Only thing I don't like is the swordfish. Seems cheap. Rest is awesome.

Shiva, Max & Estel Gameplay (Mr. X Nightmare DLC)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wFfQeH20zCQ

If this isn’t the best belt-scroller of all time, it sure is close. We have to play the fuck out of it in 4P when the DLC comes out. It will be a riot having so many more character choices.

I think there will be new stages too. Check the new trailers on the official site: https://www.streets4rage.com/

Outrageous action!

We have to 1CC this in 4P. It’s either that, or we may as well quit videogames, otherwise what’s the point?

No date yet on the DLC. I am keeping an eye out for it.

I can’t wait to see what this team will work on next. A SOR5 wouldn’t bother me at all, but if I was them I’d make Golden Axe IV.

Love how you get scanlines on the retro stages, the bonus rewards and so on. The new characters feel really good to play, too.

Thumbs up for such a tiny price!

So from what I gather, the characters have new moves now but you have to unlock them via Survival. But if Survival includes later stages, I don’t wanna fucking spoil them! And if I finish Story first, what will be the point of getting the moves later? I need the moves NOW dammit while I am playing through the damn game!

Couple of things to note.

First up, Hardest is probably too hard for this game. The only reason we play all games on the hardest settings today is because the hardest settings in modern games are equivalent to the Normal setting in older games. So we're still playing Normal, it's just that today it's called Hardest because so many weaklings are into games today, now that the barriers to entry have been lowered so much by cheap consoles and easy-to-use operating systems.

This game is different though. Hardest here isn't Normal, it's pretty hard, so I'll probably be switching to Hard at some point. I still want to spend a couple weeks banging my head against Hardest though, but everyone else can do what they like. Whoever hosts the game picks the difficulty (though if people want to play with lower settings than me, I won't be joining them). I may even switch from Hard to Normal somewhere down the line if it turns out that all the levels are old school and Normal really does mean Normal. I mean, in the '80s and '90s you couldn't even finish Normal on most arcade games (though I never turned it to lower than Normal, I just accepted I won't finish the game).

So that was the first note. The second note is that, if you're new to arcade games, you should realize that they are not meant to be played like 3D game campaigns. You don't binge them in a week and finish them. You play a few credits a few times a week or month, for many months. That's how you get better at the game, and progress in it, and perhaps some day beat it (though you will likely not beat any of them unless you have solid reflexes and commit to a game for many months, and in some cases years). If you try to play a single arcade game for an entire weekend, or even for an entire day, you'll get bored of it pretty quick, as the worlds of these games are shallow. They aren't Halo or GTA which you can get lost in for days. Going from left to right on a single plane punching people can get old fast. It's only fun—and a whole lot of fun—in short bursts. If you want to spend half a day playing arcade games, you can, but you gotta mix it up. If I am in an arcade I like to start with an hour or two of an STG, then maybe some brawling, then perhaps a few credits of a racer like OutRun to chill out, then maybe some more STG (not necessarily the same one I started with; usually even a different subgenre), and finally some FTG matches, then maybe some more OutRun to close the day. Then I go home and, if I still want more, I play some platformer or side-view action title. There's no way I could spend a whole day playing SoR4, or even half a day. And the better you get at these games, the fewer credits you play: if you can play for an hour on one credit, I'd play two credits at a time at most.

Of course, if you're on a PC online, you can also use arcade games to sprinkle around your modern gaming. Say you just got done playing your 4P Wildlands session with your group. You can play some STG or FTG or side-view action or belt-scroller at the end to unwind.

Hardest difficulty seems to be the standard difficulty to me and the guys I played with all said the same thing. Note that "Hardest" is the third-highest difficulty despite the name. We are steadily making it further and further as we play more. ysignal and I made it to what I am pretty sure is the second-to-last stage after maybe ten or twelve hours of playtime each and while we are both fairly familiar with the series neither of us have played many games in this genre. There is noticeable difficuly scaling where you have less health the more players you have and because we are forced to use Steam Remote Play Together to hit the max playercount you do need to put up with some slight input lag but I think with four similarly experienced players it should be pretty reasonable to 1CC the game on Hardest.

Mania+ was added with the DLC and iirc Mania was an unlockable difficulty. Hardest was the hardest level at launch iirc and that’s why we chose it. We started playing at launch after all, and unlockable difficulties or difficulties added after launch are typically meant for autists or people too poor to buy multiple games.

I suggest you keep playing on Hardest. The main difference isn't the damage you take which seems to be about the same, it's that enemies have more moves and there are more of them in a few places. The pickups are still abundant so it doesn't feel much more difficult compared to Hard but it does make it more interesting since different enemies have to be approached in different ways now. For example the Donovans (the black guys with a gold chain around their necks) will do an uppercut if you try to jump towards them on Hardest but they never do it on Hard.

I've only played three sessions but I made it further on Hardest in my last one than in the first one on Hard.
