Changes to the mixing table | Rust Update 7th August 2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmU76anWgI4

Image

It talks about all the changes this month, not just the mixing table. There were some last-minute adjustments after his last video, and he details them here. Also, a canoe is coming, and a "storage monitor" feature probably for the Rust+ app.

It appears you can surf with the boogie boards from the summer DLC lol. Just gotta find some time to hit the waves amongs all the chaos on Uberust. I am looking forward to larger waves and full surfboards, then I can finally stop playing Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer.

A crazy-cool base with pool area and beachfront property:

In the last video he shows that "you can legit go to an oil rig" with the boogie board...

You can also go with an inner tube, but it goes slow. On the OTHER hand, you can pull a gun on the inner tube... so it's like a cheap-ass craftable-anywhere gunboat that you carry on your person at all times. Pretty fucking insane. Would never have occurred to me.

It's a fantastic video. If you can't see what Rust still has that the FP4X games don't, let alone the rest of the Rust-copycat survival-builders, and why it still challenges the former and destroys the latter, watch that entire video.

This custom RUST map is a bit mad | Skull Adventure Island
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAJeQqlxjxg

It's an insanely original map. I watched the whole video. I am not a fan of EVERYTHING they've done, but I am a fan of a lot of it, and in any case it shows how powerful the map editor is. You can make things with it that barely seem mechanically possible in Rust. And if those randoms managed to make something that unique, imagine what I could make with it. If the map editor is too complicated I'll hire someone to implement my designs, if I can find one who doesn't ask for much.

Edit: He seems to have made the video private now. A mere five minutes ago I was watching it... Can't find it anywhere on his channel now.

Destroyable road signs, windscreens and weather! | Rust update 21st August 2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLyI46z-bWI

Image

Nothing earth-shaking. Just a bunch of smaller cool additions, plus the new weather systems that should add greatly to Rust's already excellent atmosphere. Note that though other games in the genre have weather, they are usually cheap effects. The fact that Facepunch has had a previous implementation that they pulled (or never put in the game in the first place, I am not sure on this) tells me that, when the system goes in, it should be best-in-genre.

Weather is here! First look at stables, HDRP news | Rust update 9th October 2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90XG_dZKldw

Image

Weather will be in in November's update, plus stables to buy horses from. I guess up next will be garages? I mean if they made copters, boats and horses buyable, I don't see why they would leave cars as the only ones that spawn randomly. The weather effects look fantastic, and coupled with the trails lend even greater atmosphere to the game's already fantastic atmosphere. I can't wait to try all this stuff out. However, I really need to buckle down and get D&D started this month, so I won't be trying to play Rust until D&D is well established and running smoothly and efficiently, which I expect to happen about a month after we run the first game. So all in all, I expect to announce a large Rust session for the whole clan perhaps with December's update. We'll see how it goes.

The bad news is that, due to "performance issues", they've stopped work on HDRP—the new graphics engine they had been working on for months, or indeed years. They are not cancelling it, they are just putting it on hold "for the foreseeable future". That's a bummer especially since we have new graphics cards just released and new processors coming up soon, which means that older ones will be getting cheaper. I don't see how performance can be a reason to drop such a major update. But in any case, the work is not completely going to waste because they are saying they will be porting many of the new assets into the current engine, so the game WILL get prettier and with more diverse terrain like new cliffs for example. When combined with the weather and the trails, I think it will be a significant facelift to the game, and help keep it feeling fresh and immersive. And I am sure that sometime in the coming months they will reconsider the performance issues of the new engine, and continue work on it. Count on that. The game is only going to get more popular, and they have all the reasons in the world to continue developing it, which must of course include aesthetics.

I SO look forward to playing more Rust wipes soon, and I hope many of you feel the same way and plan to join me!

Twitch drops, supply drop V2 | Rust update 13th November 2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uokL504ZSXM

Image

Lots of minor additions and fixes, but the big news comes right at the end: the drone is being worked on... It's been in the game files for ages, but they are restarting work on it. Plus work on the rail system continues, and the new art assets.

This is what the drone looks like:

Image

Seems like a pure surveillance drone. I imagine you will be able to control it from your base to patrol the map or guide your friends into a raid, while you sit on the computer and watch via the screen. But I would imagine you would need a walkie talkie to talk to your friends—if we ignore Discord—so I hope that's coming next.

Subs soon? + new DLC?! | Rust update 14th May 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYBjVu3KLFM

Image

Looks like subs will go in for next month. So seaside bases will be de rigueur from now on. We are talking you'll need space for inflatables and kayaks, two types of boats and two types of submarines. We're talking a full naval base! Why would you want to build inland and miss out on all this fun? Now granted, mountain bases are also awesome, so I guess the perfect setup would be on a mountaintop overlooking the sea, with a naval base right under you. But good luck finding such a setup, and good luck grabbing it. But it'd be a fantastic challenge to go for in the toughest servers. I am always game.

But the most awe-inspiring piece of news in this video is that they are making it so that a server can send a client (i.e. YOU) TO ANOTHER SERVER.

Do I need to explain what that means?

Life is about to get rusty, dudes. Very, very rusty.

P.S. Don't forget we have yet to experience the new graphics. I will organize a mega session very soon. Very, very soon!

Spearguns, Sharks & Torpedoes! | Rust Update 16th July 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WmcYeM3kWI

Image

It also shows a bit of the subs and underwater labs. All that stuff and more will be in by the time we play again. I foresee us making a base at some remote icy place in Rustoria, and getting around the map via sub. A very remote base is our best bet for Rustoria. That’s how we were surviving in Rustafied when it was number one. Gotta go back to basics to survive.

Fishing! Latest underwater news | Rust Update 23rd July 2021
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp5FUDgC4eE

Image

He's saying all the underwater stuff might make it for August's update: fishing, sharks, spearguns, torpedoes, and submarines. If some of it doesn't make it for August, it'll surely be there for September. That's all the devs are working on right now, and there have been tons of commits in recent days.

Sharks! And Underwater Update on Staging | Rust Update 30th July 2021

Everything looks fantastic. There's real underwater combat now, two types of torpedoes (for submerged and surface targets), spearguns, and increased underwater visibility to make the depths fully playable now.

These 5 plugins are really changing Rust
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz6I6kKOCa0

Image

The mod scene is exploding. It seems to be 10x as developed as when we last checked it in the last Uberust. Remember when we were struggling to add some PVE in the form of zombies? Now you can make the game full PVE if you want with entire NPC bases and vehicle convoys. More cool stuff in the video too like plugging into the power pylons, floating water bases and jetpacks.

We could make an insane Uberust with this stuff. Imagine the entire map full of NPC bases and the roads patrolled by convoys. You would have to fight nail and tooth merely to put a small base down. And imagine how many other useful mods might exist that Shadowfrax didn’t highlight in this video. I would particularly want one that saves your server from forced wipe so you can keep playing the same game for months. That would let us play Uberust once per month in place of Cosmic War, so we could play all three of my games forever.

We need to look into this.

Our server now is almost 2x as fast too as in the last Uberust. It should be able to handle insane amounts of animals and NPCs.

New trainyard event and locomotive! | Rust Update 22nd July 2022
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhQMBQ7kD_k

Image

The new train assets look fantastic, and the train yard finally becomes a real train yard and is linked to the rail network. I was hoping that all the monuments would be linked with this update, but it seems they'll be doing them in stages.

I am thinking of playing the week of August 4-11. I would love to spend a full week trying to make a base attached to the rail network, or at least with a rail outpost in the vicinity. I look forward to posting more Cult Base designs and generally fleshing out the new subforum.

I guess I'll see how I feel about it and keep you posted. Currently I am 60% leaning towards playing.

Hardcore mode, Flashbangs | Rust update 29th July 2022
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y26IEPslT0

Image

The weapons are getting fleshed out with flashbangs and molotovs for the next update, which is great, and the train system is coming along, but the megaton announcement in this video is the "hardcore mode" that does away with the map, team system, compass, markers, and lots of other things.

Zach Henderson wrote:I miss the old map system where you had to make paper and there was "fog of war". You had to actually explore to find monuments and mark your map.

I am ambivalent about hardcore. I do like the general idea of it, but I don't like jump-checks and shooting my own people by mistake. This will also render the Rust+ app useless, and that app was like the endgame for large clans as you could direct massive tactical operations from it.

The ideal would be if the game BEGAN with hardcore, but then you could research and CRAFT stuff that gave you all the advanced map and tracking features. Let us MAKE compasses and radio-radars and tablets to run the Rust+ app or whatever, and make all this stuff mid- and late-game gear. I'll make a post on the game's roadmap asking for it. Maybe they'll do it in some years.

Until then... I will wait to see what server owners do. Most likely the main servers will stay with normal mode, and they'll have a couple of smaller ones with hardcore mode, in which case I'll stick to the main servers as pop trumps everything.

Chance of me playing on Thursday is up to 75% now.

New Water and Industrial Crafting changes | Rust Update 13th January 2023
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ae6zTIDzWI

Image

Much better water and water physics coming (that will be influenced by weather such as storms), plus other random cool stuff like being able to fly the drones et al.

The automation still looks daft, however, and Shadowfrax at least doesn't seem to have noticed. Which tells me that the community hasn't noticed either, otherwise Shadowfrax would probably know by now, and would probably have said something.

First look at ferry terminal, divers suit, tug boat and more Rust Update 23rd June 2023
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsXnjhoI21Q

Image

New tugboat looks great, "biggest vehicle in the game", though that's nowhere near as impressive as it was before I started playing Star Citizen. That said, if they let you place sleeping bags in it, it should be great fun driving it up and down the coast, raiding people while gathering stuff, and then returning to your base to offload and go out again. It also doesn't look like it will come with any weapons, so ideally you'll have some subs and speedboats along with you to protect it. If you could also land copters on something, it would be a rusty carrier group.

The ferry terminal is also cool, but won't be functional in the next update. The diving suit and associated item skins look like some of the best modelling work in the game, but unfortunately won't have any mechanical effect like previous such efforts so they can sell it as DLC and not have the pay-to-win complaints. That's TERRIBLE for the game. Pay-to-win is preferable to cool items with no mechanical effects. Star Citizen does it MUCH better, with EVERYTHING being unapologetically pay-to-win there. Ah, Facepunch is garbage at game design compared to the genius of Chris Roberts.

I would be tempted to play on July 6 (the next update), but I can't take the time off Battlegrounds right now. Too many things people are expecting there for me to take a whole month off, or even just a couple of weeks. So I'll stay focused on Battlegrounds throughout the summer, with only the occasional short break as with Foxhole tomorrow, and I'll wait until the fall to do another Rust wipe or two. By then the ferry terminal should be fully operational, and also the new water update so I can enjoy the tug boat even more.

That's one advantage Rust still has over Star Citizen: boats and water/diving mechanics. CIG has said they want to make ships, but their water tech has a ways to go before it's ready for that. They're putting in swimming mechanics soon apparently. You can already walk at the bottom of their oceans, but not much more than that. Of course, nothing beats Atlas here, but that game has other problems (above all that they've nerfed its giant planet to tiny little servers bounded by invisible walls; they've totally screwed that game over by now, it's almost a different game, RIP OG Atlas).
