PF2 Pathfinder Adventure Path: Quest for the Frozen Flame

Unread postby icycalm » 17 Jun 2021 13:47

This is the latest Adventure Path, announced at the recent PaizoCon 2021, and it's a three-parter, which is getting quite common for PF2 (all the PF1 APs are six-parters). James Jacobs explains why they like to also do some three-parters these days: https://paizo.com/threads/rzs43d95?New- ... n-Flame#21

James Jacobs wrote:One of my favorite side-effects of doing 3-part Adventure Paths is that it gives us the flexibility and chance to do an Adventure Path that DOESN'T tie to other products. Adventure Paths are already one of the hardest things we do, and it's almost like a vacation when we get to one that doesn't require coordination between multiple other projects.

This one goes from level 1 to about 10, just like the previous ones I think. Half of their three-parters are now 1-10, and half 11-20, while the six-parters in PF2 are all 1-20. They standardized this, as opposed to PF1 where some would end at 16, some at 17, etc. I think there was even one that ended as low as 14-15.

Part 1/3: Broken Tusk Moon expected approximately 26 Jan 2022

Paizo wrote:For generations, the Broken Tusk following has roamed their small patch of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords in relative peace. Now, to avoid annihilation from a maniacal war horde, they must flee into the unknown. If the Broken Tusks are to survive their flight, a team of their best scouts will need to chart a safe path through an unforgiving wilderness. Along the way, they'll uncover the mysteries of a powerful artifact that promises to change the course of history.

"Broken Tusk Moon" is a Pathfinder adventure for four 1st-level characters. This adventure begins the Quest for the Frozen Flame Adventure Path, a three-part monthly campaign in which the heroes lead a band of nomadic hunter-gatherers across a brutal primordial landscape. This adventure also includes a catalog of the characters' band, the Broken Tusks; new spells, feats, and items perfect for trappers and foragers; and new prehistoric creatures to befriend or bedevil your players.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world's oldest fantasy RPG.

So, for me, who isn't particularly already interested in the Realms of the Mammoth Lord, I just think it sounds like a really novel angle to approach an adventure from. There's been a handful of wilderness exploration segments of past AP's, with varying degrees of success, but an AP focused entirely on wilderness exploration and survival--not exploring a mysterious island or frontier, just straight up trying to survive in a hostile environment--feels pretty new.

Plus, in part because I've never been super interested in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, I'm intrigued by what kind of story could take place there. It's untouched ground in a subgenre that hasn't been approached at all in Pathfinder so far: straight up stonepunk.

They finally revealed the stonepunk campaign's first cover! It's coming out in January.

Gorgeous, I think. I've already updated the campaign map with it. I especially love the logo. It tells a whole story by itself. Compare to the mockup cover's logo from a few months back when the campaign was announced:

The mockup covers are bad. Not necessarily in concept, but certainly in execution. And the early logos tend to look shit. I hate that I have to use them on my map until the final cover is revealed, but such is life.

This sounds like a campaign made for Archonus. Too bad it's PF2. We'll be playing it in 5-10 years lol.

The word "mammoth" appears 63 times, so, no spoilers, it is possible. ;)

Yup, this sounds like it's right up my alley lol. Oh well, maybe a descendant of Arco Arboros will go on that journey?

Player's Guide is out! Campaign has some serious hexploration and survival elements, and a follower system that gives up to 2,400 followers at 20th-level! Even at 1st-level you get 1-2 followers!

I looked it over, no spoilers. Check it out if you're curious. You'll learn a bit about the Realm of the Mammoth Lords and get a nice preview of what you might be playing in a few years, when we get to Season 2. And note that your characters can go to that region even now. They just won't be playing this particular campaign, but they can still go there and have briefer side-adventures. So if you feel like reading 12 pages about one cool region of Battlegrounds, here's your chance.

That's always a great thing. Nothing better to put players in the mood than a little bit of well-written fiction. Even five pages can work wonders.

Aaron Shanks, Marketing & Media Manager wrote:Don't forget the volumes will include back-matter articles full of lore you can't access from the Open Gaming License sites like Archives of Nethys.

FOLLOWING OF THE BROKEN TUSK
by Ron Lundeen and Stephanie Lundeen
Few beings alive know the land and its secrets better than these hardy hunter-gatherers. The story of the Broken Tusks is one of faith, bravery, and sacrifice.

MEGAFAUNA
by Jessica Catalan
Learn all there is to know about mighty animals like dinosaurs, cave bears, and mammoths!

RELIGIONS OF THE REALM
by Jessica Catalan
The traditions, rituals, and customs of the natives of northern Avistan are as rich as they are steeped in divine power. Discover the faiths of the followings!

HILLCROSS
by Jason Tondro
Mammoth Lords convene at the only major settlement in their realm to trade, gather news, and negotiate peace. Explore the Oasis of the North, Hillcross!

We will actually be able to incorporate 90% of this lore into our world RIGHT AWAY, because 90% of it is independent of the Pathfinder metaplot. The majority of conditions in that region are the same in PF1 as in PF2. In fact, from what I know about the metaplot, that region was probably not touched at all by the cataclysmic events at the end of PF1. There might even be a couple of shorter adventures set there from the PF1 days; I need to look into it.

So if you combine those shorter adventures with all the lore and maps etc. we will be getting from this trilogy between January and March, this means we'll have a fully-fleshed Realm of the Mammoth Lords for our teams to play in by end of March.

I believe book 3 has a Mammoth Lord archetype in it. Not sure if that includes the ability to ride mammoths, but maybe? Here's hoping :)

It does and it does.

And here is the music theme I chose for the campaign, it's one of my top 5-top 10 that I've picked so far.

Tell me it doesn't go perfectly with the campaign's description:

Battlegrounds wrote:A team of scouts lead a band of nomadic hunter-gatherers across a brutal primordial landscape.

I think it goes perfectly.

I can't wait to run this thing some day. And who knows, some of our characters might get there earlier for a preview.
