Free-roaming design (aka open-world design)

I'm pretty sure that at least 3 out of the 4 screenshots in the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 review are actually from Xenoblade Chronicles X

CULT|icycalm
lol
Actually, I think you might be wrong
Because I took all of them from a NeoGAF thread
Unless the thread was for X
Nope, the thread was for X, so all the screens are from it

CULT|Diamond Dawg
that's possible, since I haven't played XC2 much yet, but the final screenshot is definitely from XC1
oh okay

CULT|icycalm
It's not called Chronicles in Japan btw
It's just called Xenoblade X (Cross)
The games are Xenoblade, Xenoblade X, and Xenoblade 2
I'll look for the right screens now

CULT|Diamond Dawg
oh, makes sense
at first I thought maybe the developers had reused a ton of assets lol

CULT|icycalm
I am completely ignorant on these games, hence the error; they all look the same to me
And going from the review, I don't see myself touching them
What amazes me about these JRPG players, is that they trash the game even though they put in 100 hours to finish it
To be sure, almost NONE of them trashes these games, but the handful that do, despite finishing them, sure are weirdos
It's very hard to find a decent analysis of these games, so when I do, I make sure to post it

CULT|Diamond Dawg
the Xenoblades that I've played have cool open worlds and decent combat, but then those things are always ruined by things like the gacha system or grinding
I keep hoping each new sequel will get rid of that stuff, but it doesn't look like that'll ever happen at this rate

CULT|icycalm
Are the open worlds barren?
I never see anything in them other than the characters in screenshots
They feel like a wasteland -- going by the screens
Compare to GTA...
Or Far Cry...

CULT|Diamond Dawg
yeah, they are. There are some items to find and the occasional rare monster, but other than that they're empty. They're not cool open worlds then, I guess

CULT|icycalm
lol
I bet the items are hanging in midair too

CULT|Diamond Dawg
I meant that the environment design just looks very cool to me
haha they're actually just blue dots hanging around
you don't know what they are until you walk over and collect the dot

CULT|icycalm
lol
Oh Japan
Then you have to go to another screen to fight...
And you can't even take all your characters that are RIGHT THERE WITH YOU
Japan just completely misses the point of the open world

CULT|dynamite
:ok_hand::ok_hand::ok_hand:
that's what happens when 2d jrpgs directors get their hands on 3d technology

CULT|icycalm
monkeys with nukes
they just go bananas
They didn't create the tech; it was just handed to them; so they've no idea how to use it
Until Nintendo with Zelda I guess
They did their homework

CULT|dynamite
I'm sure a good japanese action director could get it right

CULT|icycalm
It's not about ACTION

CULT|dynamite
Imagine mikami directing the next far cry

CULT|icycalm
Action is linear
Action is Platinum
Look at Bayonetta
It SUCKS in terms of the environment
It's worse than DMC1!

CULT|dynamite
yeah you're right, wrong choice of words

CULT|icycalm
And I think I heard that Psycho Break 2 is kind of open-world
So Mikami has already tried, and I hear the results are not excellent
Like I said, it seems that Nintendo was the first Jap studio to get it right
Even Kojima failed

CULT|dynamite
I heard it was his best horror game, but people are complained about the difficulty

CULT|icycalm
"Horror game" is not a genre

CULT|dynamite
actually I heard a lot of different things from different people

CULT|icycalm
It's a theme
People who say such things are morons
Nothing to be understood from reading the dribblings of morons who can't tell the difference between theme and genre
A "horror game" can be a text adventure, get it?
It can be a JRPG
It can be a fucking puzzle game
I have understood NOTHING about the game when someone describes it as "horror game"

CULT|dynamite
his best pew pew shooty game
:smirk:

CULT|icycalm
It probably is not that either
It's probably an action-adventure
I don't know though, and people who don't understand what genre means can't help

CULT|dynamite
would you call biohazard 1 action-adventure?

CULT|icycalm
Yes
That's what it is

CULT|dynamite
Then I'd think it's the same genre

CULT|icycalm
Sounds good

CULT|Saf
Capcom had solid open world design with Dragon's Dogma
Which predates BotW

CULT|icycalm
To be honest I am not sure if DD and the Xeno games qualify as "open world"
Otherwise all CRPGs ever are "open world"
"Open world" really means "GTA3-like"
That's when the genre started
But until I play DD, the Xeno games and BotW myself, we won't really know what's happening
Can't really take anyone else's word for it seeing as how I seem to be the only one who can handle genres correctly

CULT|Saf
I look forward to your analyses
I've tried the Xeno games, always get bored in a couple hours

CULT|icycalm
The latest abuses of genre in this Discord were DJ Orwell calling Condemned: Criminal Origins a "dungeon crawler" (it is a first-person action game lol)
and Adjudicator calling Synthetik a roguelike (it is a real-time action game that has grinding, whereas roguelikes are turn-based tactics games that were made specifically to destroy grinding lol)

CULT|Saf
"Roguelike" has become a meme slapped onto any game with randomly generated levels
It's dumb

CULT|icycalm
It all seems dumb to me
Every single abuse of genre
It's all so clear in my mind, and I struggle time and again to understand what everyone else is thinking
The truth is that they mostly aren't
