Well, the full (intentionally ridiculous, I think) title is:

Slaves to Armok: God of Blood
Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress

and I've got the feeling that this is one of those games that everyone but me already knows about (it having been out since 2006), but I just discovered it and am intrigued after having an hour or so to play it over the weekend.

Anyone who hasn't heard of it ought to read this, and keep going as long as they can:

It's still in alpha, so to say it's been "out" since 2006 is misleading. I mean, it didn't even have Z-levels until a year or so ago.

One thing I wish tutorials and similar overviews would point out is that there are no objectives in this game. That's not uncommon--see SimCity and its ilk--but there's no intuitive sense of what makes a "good" fortress, other than one where everyone isn't starving to death. Unfortunately, the addition of Z-levels made this objective trivially easy, since you can farm almost anywhere after you've tunneled into a hillside. Long-term (2+ years) sustainability is trickier, but most players end up attempting an engineering project just for the hell of it.

I still keep an eye on development, though. The scope and detail of the simulation are ridiculous.

I'd say reaching the dwarf economy without wanting to tear your eyeballs out is a good objective to reach for, but yes, there's no real "goal" in the traditional sense.

The game is pretty amazing. There's an enormous amount of detail in everything you do, from legendary items your craftsdwarfs create to the specific kinds of weapons you want in your traps to records of past events being engraved on your floors and walls. And it's all being made by one person and his brother. This is a labor of love if I've ever seen one. I really look forward to seeing this game grow.

I am on a Mac laptop right now, and I don't even have a mouse. Would this game be at all playable with a touchpad?

Also, if this is Chapter II, what was Chapter I?

There's very little mouse support. You can enable the mouse for scrolling and some designations, but almost all menus and tasks still require keyboard input. In fact, the real problem might be lack of a numpad:

Chapter I was just Slaves to Armok: God of Blood, an abandoned 3D prototype.

It started with a lot of the same design goals that were moved over to Dwarf Fortress, but the devs scrapped it when they realized that 3D graphics were too much of a time sink.

Is that answer hipsterish enough for you?

At least it seems to have graphics, so maybe this time I'll get around to playing it.

It's also coming on itch.io, but no one cares about that.
