Company of Heroes 2 is an upcoming real-time strategy game being developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega for the Microsoft Windows platform. It is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2006 game Company of Heroes.

As with the original Company of Heroes, the game will be set in World War II but will focus on the Eastern Front. Company of Heroes 2 will run on Relic Entertainment's proprietary Essence 3.0 game engine, which THQ claims will allow the developer to bring "new technological advancements" to the game. In January 2013, Sega acquired Relic Entertainment and along with it the Company of Heroes intellectual property from THQ. The game is currently slated for an early 2013 release.

The game will feature the Soviet Red Army as a new faction and will take the player on various stages of the Eastern Front campaign, from Operation Barbarossa to the Battle of Berlin. The game is built on Relic's proprietary Essence 3.0 engine, which showcases new improvements compared to Relic's previous games. One such improvements is the new line-of-sight technology, TrueSight, which aims to better emulate troop visibility in real combat. In contrast with traditional unit visibility, TrueSight more accurately represents a unit's visibility range based on environmental conditions and type of unit. Essence 3.0 will also incorporate an innovative weather-simulating technology known as ColdTech and destructible environments.

That doesn't even look like RTS from those screens. Where are the bases? I have no idea why people are calling this series the best RTS ever. I have the Company of Heroes Anthology right here and will be giving it a shot once I've set up my new PC, but if I had to take a guess right now, I'd say it's the detailed character models and people's lack of familiarity with the genre that's responsible for this absurd level of hype. The game may be a good real-time tactics title, but that's a whole other ballgame from being a great real-time strategy one.

Haha, I got it!

There are no bases because this is World War II! You can't build barracks and walls and towers and castles in a World War II setting -- never mind entire cities -- because that's not how war works in the modern era. The most you can build is temporary fortifications, which have nothing to do with strategy but only with tactics. All WWII warfare was tactical warfare. The strategy took place at the level of NATIONS! They'd have to simulate Hitler in Berlin moving chess pieces on a map and issuing orders to North African oil fields or Norwegian iron mines or some shit, which means they'd have to go for a grand strategy model in real-time in the Europa Universalis mold (and that's indeed what Hearts of Iron is, but without the micro-management found in small-scale RTSes, because then the game would have to be insanely complex).

See how the aesthetics affect the "gameplay" now, retards?

And when you move into sci-fi, as with Command & Conquer and Supreme Commander, you can move back to the classic RTS scale again because with sci-fi you can do whatever the fuck you want and it will still make some kind of sense in your fantastical, twisted universe!

Sega of America and Sega Europe today announced that Company of Heroes 2, the eagerly anticipated strategy game from newly acquired Relic Entertainment is scheduled for release on June 25th, 2013 in North America and Europe.

Originally slated for earlier in 2013, Relic Entertainment is using the additional time to help Company of Heroes 2 meet the high standard set by its predecessor, the highest rated strategy game of all time. Underpinned by the cutting-edge Essence 3.0 Engine, Company of Heroes 2 brings tactical strategy to life like never before, thanks to the realistic ColdTech™ weather system, the revolutionary dynamic line of sight system, TrueSight and realistic destructibility.

Jonathan Dowdeswell, Executive Producer of Company of Heroes 2, commented, “Our acquisition by Sega has given us the chance to work with a new partner that has a great track record of working with long standing PC franchises. It gives us great confidence to know that we have a well aligned team working to bring the best experience we can to gamers around the world.”

“We hate to disappoint our fans with a later than expected date as we know they are eager to play but we feel that the additional time will help the team deliver the high quality sequel they deserve,” commented Greg Wilson, Producer of Company of Heroes 2. “However, the wait won’t be long as players will soon be able to help us test and balance multiplayer in the upcoming Closed Beta. Details will follow shortly.”

The Company of Heroes 2 Closed Beta is current not closed at all, since Sega has announced that anyone can get in simply by 'Liking' its Facebook page.

In exchange for clicking the enlarged 'Like' button on the game's official FB profile - and the inherent free advertising - Sega will give you an access code for the "second phase" of the currently-underway beta, which kicked off earlier this month.

The codes are redeemable via Steam, so you'll need to have the free Steam client installed to play.

The beta features multiplayer and skirmish gameplay, with access to six maps and the ability to team up with friends for battle against others online or against AI. You'll also get the first 40 levels of progression, and customisable loadouts.

You can read more info on the available beta maps here.

Sega has confirmed a Company of Heroes 2 release date of June 25, 2013 in North America and Europe.
