A new digital TCG by Cryptozoic:

The first ever real MMO/TCG for your PC & MAC

From the team that brings you the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, HEX is a free-to-play game that combines the compelling collectible and strategic game play of a trading card game (TCG) with the amazing community and storytelling aspects of a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) to create an entirely new gaming experience: the MMO/TCG. We've come so far in pairing these two genres together, and we're asking for your help to take us across the finish line.

Cryptozoic Entertainment, creators and publishers of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, is excited and proud to introduce HEX: Shards of Fate, the first real MMO/TCG. A completely unique game that takes place in an original and exciting fantasy world, HEX was created from the ground up as a digital trading card game and brings tremendous innovation to how a TCG can be played.

With all the social interaction and roleplaying you would expect from a fully featured MMORPG, along with the deep strategic and collectible game play of a TCG, HEX is a completely new gaming experience. We're designing full card sets, dungeons, storyline, community tools, advanced AI, and so much more. This is a massive undertaking and that's why we're asking for your help to bring HEX to life.

What are our goals for HEX?

• We want to bring together both experienced TCG veterans and new players who have never played a collectible card game before. The game is free to download and play, so anyone can give it a try!

• We want you to join guilds with other TCG players and practice dueling with the latest deck builds.

• We want you to enter online TCG tournaments and win awesome prizes.

• We want you to take your TCG skills and have them drive an RPG experience, unlocking new cards and treasure, as well as developing your character within a compelling, completely original story.

• Most of all, we want the experience to be deep, engaging, and polished.

That’s what we want to provide for you … but we need your help!

I'm pretty excited about this. The game blatantly copies Magic the Gathering's rules but offers what seems to be a much more polished game than the ugly Magic the Gathering Online. They also offered some awesome rewards in their kickstarter, like a free draft every week for life in the Pro Player Tier.

The cards are separated in the PvP and the PvE cards. Only the first can be used in tournaments, while all of them can be used in the PvE section of the game, which is basically some dungeons where you battle the AI. There will also be some extra conditions in those battles, for example if you don't destroy a certain troop your opponent controls you gain extra rewards.

There are a lot of gimmicks: in the PvE section cards can use equipments which make them stronger, cards gain xp which can make them foil and there will be some kind of crafting system. The PvP however will be structured independently. You can't win or find PvP cards in the dungeons, you can only buy boosters for two dollars each, or singles in the Auction House. There will be constructed and limited tournaments too.

Another interesting thing is that they are really using the fact that this is a digital game. For example, there is a card which, by paying a cost, transforms to another card of that cost at random (something you can't do in a physical card game). The beta will probably start in September and the game is scheduled to be released in summer 2014.

Blatantly copying Magic's rules, or at any rate its general design, if that is indeed what they are doing, is a good thing. There's already enough new stuff that need to go into a new videogame that it's almost never a good idea to attempt to reinvent the wheel at the same time, if you'll be employing aspects that have already been done perfectly well elsewhere. Take Mojang's new game, Scrolls [ > ] that I just talked about in the other thread. I have no confidence at all in the card aspect of the game, because who are these dudes that are designing it? What do they know about trading card games? If the rules had been licensed off of Magic, I'd have a lot more confidence in the project. That's also why I rarely touch CRPGs that are not D&D licensed, but I'll talk about that at length in my review of Pool of Radiance.
