Life isn’t a game. There are unintended consequences. There are unexpected results. But sometimes a game – or, in this case, a computer simulation – can show us just how much reality can spiral out of control. And when faced with a catastrophic event – after which the smothering fog of murky chaos quickly casts a smothering shadow over a once-bright society – only one question remains: What will it take to save those fading remnants of civilization that cower in the dark crevices? It’s a tough question to ask, but it’s at the crux of Tom Clancy’s The Division – the newly announced online open-world action-RPG developed by Ubisoft Massive.

Looks very photorealistic. Strange there is no PC version announced.

http://gematsu.com/2013/06/restore-new- ... e-division

In The Division, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s upcoming online RPG for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, New York City has been hit with a bio-terrorist attack, placing the city on lock-down. The city is in mid-crisis, but can slowly revive if players work at it.

“A big part of the game will be restoring the infrastructure of New York,” game director Ryan Barnard told the Ubiblog. “So the players will actually see the impact of what they do in the game. They’ll fix New York, which is in this ‘mid-crisis situation’ where communication, law enforcement, power, and water are all failing.”

Barnard added, “You’ll be able to see how you basically reconnect areas of New York that have lost power or lost water back to the grid and get them functioning.”

In the E3 demo, we saw a squad of friends secure a police station. Events like these will “chain together” to help bring the city back to life. Barnard said the game is not “post-apocalyptic,” but rather a game where you experience the world “while it’s in collapse.”

In restoring New York City, you’ll play as a classless character able to switch up skills on the fly. You’ll earn skill points, which you can spend to “basically spec yourself to a role”—but the skills you’re able to acquire are “totally open.”

Barnard hopes that being open and not locked to a single class will allow for better communication and teamwork. Though, that’s not to say you can’t play the game on your own, without a team. Barnard promises it is a “wonderful single-player game.” Of course, there will also be player-versus-player matches and factions, as well.

The Division will also have its own black-market economy. “You’ll be able to craft new weapons and items for yourself or your fellow agents, or put it on the market,” Barnard said. “The market will take a cut of it, of course. But having a very deep economy is important, so players have activities that aren’t always just about fighting.”

A second-screen companion app will also be available. In the E3 demo, we saw a tablet player act as a drone, buffing allies and debuffing enemies, as the squad tried to secure the police station.

“It’s something we’re really, really proud of,” Barnard said of the companion app. “It’s where we’re really setting the bar for next-gen games. Our companion gaming is real-time simultaneous gameplay on the tablet. You will be able to play as a drone and join a group, just as if you’re another player. You have your own persistence within the drone and have progression and skills and talents, a lot like the main game. So it’s not just a fluffy armory or an application. It’s a real game client that you can use to interact with the game itself.”

The Division will have an endgame, Barnard promised, but will continue to be playable beyond the game’s ending. The team hasn’t said anything yet, but it’s also possible the game will extend beyond its ending or beyond New York City entirely.

Gary Steinman wrote:You asked for it (at least judging from the hundreds of comments on this UbiBlog post when the game was first revealed – and the thousands of comments on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere). And now Ubisoft is delivering. Today, Ubisoft confirmed that along with the previously announced PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, Tom Clancy’s The Division will be available on PC as well.

Why PC… and why now? Much of the credit goes to the vocal and passionate PC community. “Since E3 we have been carefully listening to what has been said on the internet,” said Executive Producer Fredrik Rundqvist. “I can’t stress enough how important it has been for us to feel your support, interest and commitment to the game. Your opinions matter to us. The positive energy you bring back to the team will help us create the best game possible. One of the most frequently discussed topics has been that of releasing The Division on PC. With that in mind, I’m very pleased to announce that the game will be available on PC. Massive Entertainment has its roots in PC development with titles like Ground Control and World in Conflict. You can be certain that we will provide you with a first-rate PC experience.”

There is a rumor that the game has been visually downgraded: http://www.dsogaming.com/news/rumor-the ... -visually/

Whatifgaming reported that The Division has already been downgraded visually. According to Whatifgaming, a source dev (whose identity cannot be revealed for obvious reasons) told them that the team has already took out ‘quite a lot of screen space reflections from the game’ and that the final product will not look as good as its E3 2013 reveal.

Here is the full email Whatifgaming received. As we’ve already said, take this with a grain of salt. Moreover, we don’t expect Ubisoft to confirm such a thing, even if this is legit information. As with Watch_Dogs, we’ll have to rely on what Ubisoft showed back in E3 2013 and we’ll compare the latest builds with that one in order to find out whether the game’s visuals are not up to what the French company showcased back then.

We really loved the reception to the demo we showed on the PC version at E3. Currently as it stands, there is definitely a lot of push coming from publishers to not make the experience so different on consoles as to alienate people into thinking that next generation is not as powerful as PC. This is probably what happened at Ubisoft Montreal. I think that while making stability changes is definitely important, it does not completely obliterate a lot of enhanced rendering applications.

Right now we already took out quite a lot of screen space reflections from the game and are working on asset management the best we can given consoles have that great unified memory. Naturally we will also be using online servers and have to produce a synchronization that higher graphics add to the latency so it had to be turned down. To me it still looks good, but not as good as the original reveal. I am sure as we get closer to launch and the actual console versions of the game featuring SD (Snowdrop) that it will start to seem all too obvious to people especially those on PCs. I just wanted to write and let you know that it definitely is not just stability but marketing politics plays into this a lot as well.

UPDATED 2nd Response from The Division Developer: Truth be told in regards to your question that while ‘Yes’ the lead platform is the PC, we simply cannot have such a big gap. As you know when the first WATCH DOGS Review was published by that one site, Ubisoft called it a “false review” and I am sure everyone can see how bad that sounded when they saw the game did look marginally better than something that was a last generation GTA IV. But no, they will not admit that they practice this or actively downgrade a game. It is much easier to say they removed things for stability which is often a lie as you can tell by the post-issues which are expected in any production we do.

Also to answer your 3rd question, no…they will never fully disclose what was removed from what build as no laws ask them to do so in terms of consumer rights. If we as developers published that information in very real terms for the consumer such as “Replaced particle fog simulation with 2d layer simulation in 3d space, removed particles from all explosions, lowered explosion volume multiplier by 20x, removed X # of trees and civilians, etc.” we would be out of a lot of sales and probably it would actually require too much time to deliver on the current hype that a lot of downgraded games see which look incredible with a vertical slice. I do share this in the hope’s that my colleagues and publishers and a lot of people who make false promises and do demonstrations which wrongfully create too much hype that they cannot deliver on ultimately stop doing such things. I want to see the industry actually move forward and not be so full of itself by promising too much and delivering too little. Regards

It remains to be seen whether Whatifgaming’s report is legit or not. As with Watch_Dogs, we’ll be sure as hell to compare various builds in order to find out whether the end product looks as good as the game’s E3 2013 reveal.
