Might as well make a thread about this. The info so far is: Type X2, brand-new graphics inc. sprites (confirmed here), release date unknown.

Announcement video (0.5 MB), courtesy of am-net.

Some of the character designs make me wish Shinkiro was still doing the artwork, but then this is a helluva lot better than Falcoon's god-awful designs for the Maximum Impact series.

I am kinda lost for words...

AOU 2008 trailer (72 MB)

It just puts into perspective not only where 2D fighting games should be by now, but where videogames should be. Between this and Blazblue, I wish Capcom good luck with SFIV -- the poor bastards are gonna need it. Here're two captures from the video:

Thanks to Recap and the SRK KOF fans for the heads-up.

The one problem I have with these new 2D games is that while they might use high resolution sprites, they have nowhere near the number of frames that were in Street Fighter III. I'd rather have lower resolution and nicer animation.

Yeah, Guilty Gear is especially... guilty of this. Can someone provide some info about this? I'd really like to know if SFIII has the most fluid 2D hand-drawn animation, measured ONLY by the number of frames. KOF XII is spectacular nevertheless, much sexier than SFIV...

In principle, I agree with Molloy. But the principle doesn't apply to KOF XII, because by the looks of that video it will be the most fluid high-res 2D fighter ever. Certain animations in there are more fluid than many equivalent ones found in SFIII. It's freaking mind-blowing. SNK, the kings of sprite-recycling and upscaling, suddenly becoming masters of high-res 2D animation?

Freaking mind-blowing.

Man, it actually destroys SFIV in terms of graphical style. I'm a Street Fighter fanboy but the difference between those beautiful, silky smooth animated sprites and the bulky, neither anime/neither realistic 3D models is huge. I hope this is not included in the final game:

This is SO NOT RYU Capcom! Ryu is a cool lonely warrior seeking fighting perfection, not some lunatic from Manhunt...

If I ever review SFIV, that line is going in my review :)

MK: King of Fighters XII is the beginning of a new era of fighting games. We're trying to make it the best 2D fighting game ever.

April location test? We're going to see this playable far sooner than I would've guessed.

Screens and character artwork:

All the screens seem to be from that trailer, and unfortunately are not full-res.

Gorgeous.

What really caught my eye were these two sequential shots:

I'm intrigued. Is the background reacting to the burning knuckle? It appears as if the torches are flaring up as Terry burns past them?

I am positive that the images of the clash system are not from the trailer, nor the pictures of the new wall-stun system.

A couple of scans making the rounds for those who've yet to stumble upon them:

What's the story of the city of fat women? Somebody's resurrecting the spirit of classic SNK daydreams. I'd like to know who's responsible for the backgrounds.

They are adding in extra characters. There was some interview in Game Informer of all places with one of the game's producers where he revealed some information about the ports.

Image

They're putting in new characters, match recording/viewing, and online play that will have regular versus, but also team battles.

It is supposed to have high resolution sprites, isn't it? Why the hell do they have to scale in any way the sprite resolution?

That's right, Recap was already noticing something funny about the sprites, a suspicion that was rather plainly confirmed with this capture back in October 2008:

Es de un patetismo acojonante, todo esto.

In a hilarious turn of events, SNK Playmore itself provides proof that the game's sprites are grotesquely upscaled.
