After confirming a May release in late January, Nintendo used its latest Direct broadcasts to announce that Mario Kart 8 will arrive on 30th May in North America and Europe, with it arriving one day earlier in Japan. That official date has seen retailers start to open pre-orders, and Nintendo is no doubt watching to see whether the latest home console entry in the series can prompt the same buzz as its Wii predecessor.

December trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU7tXqYplA8
February trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=631c1fz87I8

Graphically it looks very good for the most part (some of the vehicles and the Koopalings let it down) but it remains to be seen whether the anti-gravity tracks really are a step up for the series.

Update: Originally only confirmed for the UK, the large collection of Mario Kart 8 DLC, unsurprisingly, will be making its way to North America.

The two DLC packs, which will each add three new characters, eight new tracks, and four new cars, will be available in the fall and in spring of 2015 for $7.99 each, or $11.99 for both. Among the new content, Wario’s Gold Mine course from Mario Kart Wii will be included, as well as new courses taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. F-Zero’s Blue Falcon kart will also be among the new cars in the first DLC pack. Here's the full list of included content below:

Pack 1: The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: November 2014) - $7.99

  • 3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
  • 4 Vehicles
  • 8 Courses

Pack 2: Animal Crossing X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: May 2015) - $7.99

  • 3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser
  • 4 Vehicles
  • 8 Courses

Pack 1 + Pack 2 Bundle - $11.99

  • 6 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link, Villager, Isabelle and Dry Bowser
  • 8 Vehicles
  • 16 Courses
As a bonus for purchasing both packs bundled or individually, buyers receive eight new colors for Yoshi and Shy Guy. Those who advance purchase both packs can begin using the Yoshi and Shy Guy characters immediately.

In the meantime, starting tomorrow, a free update will release for Mario Kart 8 that will add new Mercedes Benz cars and some other tweaks. You can learn more about that here. You will also be able to pre-purchase next year's DLC starting tomorrow as well.

Original story:

The Mushroom Kingdom appears to be getting set for a visitor from Hyrule. According to a posting on the Nintendo UK Store, Link will be joining the cast of Mario Kart 8.

According to the listing for add-on content, two packs are set for release. The first will be delivered in November and will include Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach. It also includes four new vehicles (Including the Blue Falcon from F-Zero) and eight new courses.

The second pack, slated for May 2015, reportedly includes Dry Bowser and two guest from Animal Crossing: Villager and Isabelle. It, too, includes another four vehicles and eight courses.

Those that purchase both packs individually or as a bundle will get eight different colored Yoshis and eight different colored Shy Guys. The packs cost £7 ($11) each. We’ve reached out to Nintendo of America for confirmation and pricing. For more, check out our review of Mario Kart 8.

Michael McWhertor wrote:Mario Kart 8 will be the fastest kart racer in the series, thanks to a new 200cc class coming to the Wii U game. Nintendo announced the speed boost during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, showing off some intense looking high-speed karting.

The new 200cc speed class will work on all tracks in the game, Nintendo says, and makes braking more important than ever.

Matthew Reynolds wrote:Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wasn't a hugely surprising announcement for the Nintendo Switch following its small teaser during the system's unveiling in October 2016.

This updated edition not only allows you to take the Wii U racer with you on the go - or play on a television at a full 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second - but it also comes with all previous DLC courses and characters, as well as a few new additions of it's own.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - which is set to release on April 28th for £49.99 in the UK - includes the following features and additions:

• The previous 32 courses and 30 characters from Mario Kart 8
• All DLC updates including 16 added courses (mixture of old and original courses, some inspired by Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda and other Nintendo franchises), six DLC racers (Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link, Villager (boy and girl), Isabelle and Dry Bowser), and additional vehicles
• Five new characters - Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl from Splatoon (each with three palette swaps), King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
• Three new vehicles, two inspired by Splatoon
• Classic Battle Mode returns with classic modes, new and old battle arenas
• Ability to carry two items at once
• Two new items - Boo (in races) and Feather (in battle mode)
• Smart Steering feature for novice players
• Improved visuals - 1080p60 on TV, 720p60 on handheld
• Up to 8 friends local multiplayer
• Up to 12 player multiplayer online
