Keza MacDonald wrote:It was originally a tech demo made by five guys in their spare time, but now EVE-VR - the Oculus Rift space dogfighting game that made its debut at EVE Fanfest this year - is going to be a full game called EVE Valkyrie, coming in 2014.

The teaser trailer is enough to give anyone with fond memories of games like Wing Commander chills. The game itself was hugely impressive even in tech demo format at Fanfest, putting you into the cockpit of a nimble fighter craft with full freedom of movement and vision thanks to Oculus Rift, but now that it's been greenlit for full production it will have the resources behind it to look truly stunning. Development is being handled at CCP's Newcastle studio in the UK, and the people at CCP's head office in Reykjavik who prototyped the game in their spare time are all moving there to lead the project.

Developer CCP is arguably already the video game world's official King of Space, as the creator of long-running, fascinatingly complex and fanatically beloved spaceship MMO EVE Online, which ties into free-to-play PS3 shooter Dust 514. EVE Valkyrie is set in the same universe, but it won't have the complex gameplay of either. It's a high-speed, high-adrenaline flight combat game.

Last time I played it, EVE Valkyrie was a multiplayer-only dogfighter, but when I asked CCP whether there would be a single-player story component in the full game the answer was an ambiguous "we're not ready to talk about that yet". With all that EVE history and lore to draw from, it's tempting to believe that a single-player campaign is part of the plan for the game.

CCP's boss Hilmar Petursson had this to say: “From the moment this year’s Fanfest attendees first got their hands on EVE-VR, the question has been, ‘When can I have this?' What started as a passion project by a small, incredibly talented group of CCP developers became one of the most highly anticipated games of the year — before we even announced it. We have big plans for EVE: Valkyrie and I can’t wait to share more details later this year.”

We'll have more on EVE Valkyrie and its evolution from experimental demo to full game later this week, as we spend more time with it at Gamescom. Until then, enjoy the trailer.

Oculus Co-Publishing EVE: Valkyrie

First, we’re thrilled to announce that the first Oculus co-publishing project is none other than EVE: Valkyrie, making Valkyrie an exclusive Oculus Rift launch title.

EVE: Valkyrie, developed by the team at CCP Games (creators of EVE Online and DUST 514), is one of the first AAA games designed exclusively for the Rift. The project, initially called “EVE-VR”, was born from a small, passionate team within CCP who supported Oculus during the Kickstarter campaign.

Since its debut at EVE Fanfest last year, Valkyrie has been a brilliant showcase for the power of VR and hands-down one of our favorite Rift games. At E3 2013, Valkyrie came away with a half-dozen awards including Best Game of E3 from PC Gamer and Most Innovative Game from IGN. Valkyrie was also a key part of the award-winning Crystal Cove demos at CES this year.

“We strongly believe the best VR experiences are going to be the ones built from the ground up for VR, and we’ve kept that in mind whilst developing Valkyrie.

We wanted people to really feel like they were there – to sense the vastness of space, feel the confined area of the cockpit and get that adrenaline rush as you see an exploding fighter whizz past your head.

In a very short amount of time this passion project became a full fledged CCP project which we’re now working on in Newcastle. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come in a year!”
