The battle system is, in effect, similar to the one of the first episode, although it's not exactly similar to Grandia's, and yes it has some (remote) similarity with Valkyrie Profile: Your work consists of protecting your companions while they cast spells, presing a certain button at the indicated moment (i.e. there is an action element, in a way).
