[PS2] Tori no Hoshi ~Aerial Planet~

I had seen this covered on IC and gamengai a while back but I didn't pay attention for some reason. I guess the screenshots didn't grab my interest straight away. Now that its release date is approaching (October 18th, according to Play-Asia) I went looking for info and I got floored. This is my number one most wanted game right now — fuck Death Smiles.

What draws me to this game is the possibility that it might offer a combination of mystery with the exhilaration of flight, two elements captured perfectly by Pilotwings and Myst, but never combined. Now I am not saying this will play anything like those two games -- all I am saying is that it gives off an impression that it might capture the mood of those two games, and that is possible without necessarily playing anything like them.

There's a video on the official site — worth watching but doesn't show any in-game footage:

Here's what jiji has to say about it:

jiji wrote:Here's something I didn't expect from NIS. It's a flight adventure game that has the player controlling a glider and exploring an alien planet that's 98% covered with water. You fly from island to island, using birds as your guide and getting them to recognize you as one of their own by recording and playing back their songs. You can name planet and animal species you come across, and you have to use bird behavior to identify which food is safe to gather and which is poisonous.

I'm getting a strong Aquanaut's Holiday vibe from this, but since the ultimate goal is to find your way back to the base camp you were separated from, it won't be quite so non-goal oriented. It looks like it'll have a very peaceful feeling to it, and since I love flight games AND pure exploration, I'm down for this.

And who is NK-System? I can't find any reference to them that's gaming-related. The only NK System co. ltd. that I can find makes... scientific instrumentation.

Holy snit, after this info dump it's my tops, too. Many thanks for the quote from jiji. I've had a subtle eye on this one since it was revealed, but haven't gotten too excited due to lack of info.

My biggest question was whether or not it was going to allow you to go exploring on those isles. jiji's impressions read as though this will be the case. Very nice, indeed!

And the animal/bird interaction and focus. Wow.

Hopefully this puppy will either not have too much of a language barrier, or get a loc.

Yeah, the language thing. I doubt it'll be too bad. I bet if you could play the Jap version of Pilotwings you'll be able to play this.

Fingers crossed. Heck, it may turn out to be an even more hypnotic experience for me if I am completely language locked. Could be like being in an entire other world.

I was wondering what happened to this game. Turns out it's been pushed back to February 28. Awesome Gpara preview:
