Forum Game: ID the screenshot

Unread postby Jedah » 30 Jan 2007 13:41

Being a member of some game forums, one of the most interesting forum games I've come across is the "ID the screenshot" game. The rules are pretty simple:

1) A member post an image or link to it if its is very big, showing a game in action (screenshot).

2) The other members must recognize which game is it. The first one to post the right answer
must post another image for the others to identify.

3) If the game is obscure and nothing happens for a while, some hints should be given at the start or after some wrong answers. Hints are considered the hardware format, year of release, dev company, publisher etc.

Requirements: You need web space to upload your images. I've subscribed at http://photobucket.com/ which is rather good. Make sure the filenames of your images do not have any tips. For example avoid naming them mario64.jpg, for obvious reasons.

So let's start then:

This is probably the greatest race simulator for PCs. Do you recognize it?

It sure looks good for a '98 release.

Actually the screenshot is taken from a modded version. The original is not that good.....

(Damn I didn't realize that this fact could make it more difficult to ID)

Ok another tip:

It was developed by Papyrus.

Grand Prix Legends.

Giving away the name of the company AND the year is too much...

There really aren't enough people here yet for this game to work.

Not bad.

Now all you need to do is some research.

I guess it's your turn now.

By the way, I thought if we are doing this we might as well learn something about the games that get mentioned. So here's Taito's offical site for Spica Adventure:

http://www.taito.co.jp/gm/spica/

I played a couple of credits at the AM Show in September. It's charming, if nothing else.

And this is an informative feature on GameSpot about the history of Papyrus:

That's the point of the game. To learn about the games themselves or to mention some other trivia.

Here's the site of the community that transformed the looks and sound of the original Gran Prix Legends:

http://www.kotr.de/GPL/

And here's the wiki:

I don't have the slightest clue about the last screenshot though. :P

Maybe we should try some more famous games....

Well, if the purpose of the thread was for us to discover cool games we didn't know, then posting images of more famous games would be defeating the purpose.

I say we try something different. Whenever someone feels like introducing us to a cool obscure game that they love, they can just post a couple of screenshots and some comments in this thread, along with any appropriate links.

So how about it zapeipaa? I'd like to know more about that platform game you posted.

It's a doujin/indie/homebrew game released at some Comiket in 2004. You move upwards on the stages by shooting down. Here's another shot:

If noone got it by tomorrow I'll tell you the title. :)

The game is called Lethal Application, one of my favorite indiegames. I'm sure there's was a trial version to download on the site, but it seems to have been removed. The circle (Daisessen) is still active so there's chances they're still selling this at Comikets or doujin shops.

Image
Anyway I find it very entertaining, you move upwards on the satges by shooting down (1), and there's some enemies trying to stop you (2)(3), and some obstacles blocking your way (5). While you're shooting or take damage you lose energy so you always have to pick up energy boxes (4). There's also powerups to pickup to make your weapons stronger (to the left of 2), and you can also go into super-mode which summons two "options", however this will of course cause your energy bar to empty three times faster.

Next one is more popular, and should be easier:
(Since noone got it, I guess I go again?)

The game is for the Playstation, and originally based on a boardgame.

Thanks for the info on Lethal Application. I will be very surprised if anyone discovers the other game. I've no idea which one it is.

There are actually two Exit games. Is that a pic of the first one?

Also, dementia, welcome to the forum. Our little game here could certainly use a few more people.

I've no idea what the new game is; that's a pretty crappy screenshot :)

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, it's the original Exit. Mr. ESC has a trenchcoat in Kangaeru Exit.

That's the PC version of MDK. Awesome game.

Here are two reviews of Sky Gunner, for those who want to learn more about this game:

http://www.insertcredit.com/reviews/skygunner/

I am not endorsing them, mind you. I haven't played the game enough to be able to tell whether the writers know what they are talking about. But they are the only reviews of this game on the net, more or less, and then you've got the screenshots...

Ok, so next game. I am playing this right now and it absolutely rocks:
