New Action Shooter from NG:Dev. So far there's just a teaser site with featuring tagline "Jump. Shoot. Explore." That last word really minimizes my hopes for this game.

Hey,

here is Timm from the company NG:DEV.TEAM.

We need help in creating pixel art for our upcoming game. It is a Jump'n'Shoot game in the like of Super Turrican and Super Metroid for NEOGEO / Dreamcast / WiiWare.

We already created most of the art and we need coloration and animation for some new art. For example big boss enemies and background art like a destroyed space ship and alien statues. But you could also design new graphics.

I guess that we can call this a trend now? I mean considering ArcSys is revisiting the genre as well? Cave next, please!

Quite simply the best videogame cover ever. I don't even know what number 2 would be, doubtless something pathetic in comparison.

... but "eurostyle" platformers were boring at best, and that video brings back memories that would be better off forgotten. And Jesus Christ with that ugly sprite already.

I am nevertheless glad that they are making it. Their games certainly deserve some attention.

Occasionally there's some excellent sprite work, and I like the atmosphere in the stage around ~3:00, but overall the art direction just sucks. The intro cinematic looks way too amateurish for me to be at all bearable.

Turrican 3 / Mega Turrican was a cool game but instead of just borrowing the good things from it (like the atmosphere in that water stage, or any of the catchy synth pop beats!) they've decided on copying the whole thing, floaty platforming engine and mindless, random stage designs and all.

There's a stage that copies some ideas from Thunder Force IV towards the end of the video, but it has none of the speed, energy or style of the original game.

The magnificent first stage from Thunder Force IV, for comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eqZ2pF4RgE

I tried the MVS version at Try Amusement Tower the other week. As expected the game design isn't very well thought-out, but the art direction and atmosphere is so much cooler than all the other recent action titles in the arcades. Recent Cave shooters look more like pachinko games than war simulators and I'm really starting to find that sickening. With this perspective in mind, giving Gun Lord a go was quite a refreshing experience! The STG stage is just terrible though.
