Ace Attorney 5 marks the return of Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist of the series since the original trilogy. The game takes place one year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the events of which cleared Wright's name of the circumstances behind his disbarment and allowed him to practice law again. He will be accompanied by a new assistant, a rookie defense attorney and psychologist named Kokone Kizuki (希月 心音 Kizuki Kokone?). The first case in the game will see Wright go up against the younger brother of Winston Payne, a recurring character in the series, as he defends a high school student who is charged for causing an explosion at the courthouse.
The game looks to continue the style of gameplay from previous installments, in which the player must utilize evidence and find contradictions in witness statements to prove their client innocent. A new system, called the Heart Scope, gives Wright the ability to gauge the emotions of a witness, such as tones of anger when mentioning certain topics. If the player notices a contradictory emotional response during testimony, Wright can point out the discrepancy and press the witness for more information. The title now features full 3D graphics and character models, allowing more dynamic camera angles during gameplay.
