E3 Presentation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI87_YzSlIM

Miyamoto went on stage to kick off Nintendo's first E3 conference of 2012. He presented to us details about the Wii U's Pikmin 3. Pikmin have gained the ability to pick up items and destroy barriers. The new species of Pikmin, called Rock Pikmin, will be able to destroy particularly strong objects. The Wii U GamePad will show a map of the area you are exploring. The GamePad will also let you check the status of all of your 100 - the maximum amount of Pikmin that can be on the screen at once - Pikmin to create a strategy to your liking. You can switch between playing between four leaders; surprisingly, Olimar isn't a leader. The game also records your playthroughs for you to watch later.

Shigeru Miyamoto Pikmin 3 Mission Mode:

Looks very cute and colorful. For some reason Pikmin in HD feels like the Smurfs to me.

I am confused by his use of the Wii remote and nunchuck though. I thought they wouldn't be used on the Wii U?

Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controllers are compatible with the Wii U console.

It is up to the developer whether they support these controllers. In this case:

This third outing will add new Pikmin types and options, and can be played with any controller set up, including GamePad only, Pro Controller and Wii Remote and Nunchuk (using the GamePad as a second monitor).
