It's funny how one of the first things that seems to come to the mind of game designers when they want to do something different and more immersive is a murder mystery of some kind. If they are not thinking about direct murder, they are thinking of indirect ones. Sherlock Holmes was the "killer app" of the compact disc in the early '90s, and look at L.A. Noire etc. I applaud this practice.

- No point&click anymore - controls like 3rd person action game

The previous game actually had three camera modes: third person, first person and a fixed view to make it look like a point-and-click game, with the controls changing according to which one you were using.

Having made a great impression at E3 in Los Angeles last month, an intriguing video will now reveal a little more of Crimes & Punishments: crime scenes, suspects and a Sherlock Holmes determined to see the guilty behind bars. Immerse yourself in the heart of London at the side of this famous detective, already hot on the heels of dangerous criminals... but has he actually found the real culprits?

Crimes & Punishments marks the most important stage in the Sherlock Holmes series. The decision by Frogwares studios to switch from the in-house engine to the Epic Unreal Engine 3 enables a much richer, more immersive and detailed rendering of both the environments and characters, which is immediately apparent from the summer teaser!

But the change of game engine has not only improved the graphics; new investigation techniques have been developed and the game can now offer 14 game mechanics. From the opening of each of the eight investigations up to the arrest of the culprits and the moral dilemmas faced by the players, the new game mechanics convey the feeling of BEING Sherlock Holmes. Players will therefore be able to exploit the incredible gifts and talents for which he is renowned, such as his ability to guess the details of an individual's life simply by observing them, or to imagine and reconstruct a past event by studying the key features of a crime scene.

Since Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments development was switched over to Unreal Engine 3, not only did the game get a graphical upgrade, it now boasts over 14 game mechanics which help convey the feeling of being the fantastic Holmes. Not only this, but the game is now heading to PS4 alongside PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in early 2014. To celebrate its next-gen news, Frogwares and Focus Home Iterative have released three new screenshots of the game and its crime scenes. Enjoy.

Crimes & Punishments, the latest Sherlock Holmes investigation game, has a new video available demonstrating the freedom of action players will experience when conducting investigations. Players will be able to pursue various lines of enquiry and make real moral choices once they’ve solved the case. The clues uncovered and the avenue pursued – or not – in each of the seven cases in the game will point to 10 suspects in a single case. Still, you could put an innocent victim behind bars if you overlook certain clues or trails so once a perpetrator is established, the player must then bear the responsibility of deciding what to do with this information. Crimes & Punishments is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Q2 2014.
