Pokemon X & Y coming to 3DS in October 2013: trailer, screens here
Pokemon was the focus of Nintendo’s latest instalment of Nintendo Direct, hosted by president Satoru Iwata. During the stream he presented a debut trailer for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, two 3DS titles coming to the handheld this October. Check out what happened here.

Iwata opened the feed by explaining that the cast was broadcast in seven languages simultaneously, suggesting it was going to be a big one.

It kicked off with a look back at Pokemon Blue, Red and Green, discussing the monsters that appeared on each of the game’s covers. Iwata explained that offering two versions of one game was a new concept at the time, and the way that Pokemon were different on each cart was positively received by fans, provoking them to try and ‘collect em all’.

1999′s Pokemon Gold and Silver were next, and Iwata recalled the big impact the colour of Game Boy Color added to the franchise. He also focused on the appearance of legendary Pokemon on the cover of each game.

Game Boy Advance’s Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were next, and Iwata stressed the importance of the game’s four-player tag function, which he said added more strategy to proceedings. 2004′s Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green also came with a wireless adapter, which Iwata also championed.

Iwata said Pokemon Diamond and Pearl – released on DS in 2006 – made tremendous progress in the series, thanks to offering in-built wireless via the console. Iwata said that this trend improved throughout all subsequent editions right up to Pokemon Black and white version 2 on 3DS.

Now on to the new stuff: Iwata revealed two new 3DS Pokemon games- called Pokemon X and Pokemon Y – which will launch October 2013. The trailer opened with Pikachu sending sparks flying across the globe, and saw a new female adventurer running across a 3D world teeming with new Pokemon such as squirrel Chespin, blue frog Froakie and a flaming marsupial.

The more you battle with your Pokemon, the stronger your bond will become, said the trailer. Seen flying above the skies was a new legendary Pokemon, and a legendary giant deer with many antlers.

We’ll have more on Pokemon X & Y as it happens, but it should reverse Nintendo’s so-called ‘weakness’ that Michael Pachter said has been dogging the company as of late.

Pokemon X and Y: new creature ‘Ninfia’ revealed, sort of
Pokemon X & Y had a reveal in the pages of Japanese magazine CoroCoro which has announced a new creature to GameFreak’s ever-expanding repertoire. It’s called Ninfia.

Gematsu reports that Ninfia is new, but evolves from Eevee. It’s not yet clear how you evolve Ninfia from Eevee – the magazine says there’s a secret to it – but the mag could confirm that Ninfia comes in at a meter tall and weighs in at 23.5kg.

Looks like we won’t have to wait until May 19 for new Pokemon X and Y information. The latest issue of CoroCoro Comic has leaked early, providing first details on the game world and four new Pokemon.

We’ll start with the latter:

Yancham – A “mischievous” fighting-type Pokemon. Height: 0.6m. Weight: 8.0kg. It has a new technique called “Parting Remark.”
Yayakoma – A “Ryukyu Robin” normal/flying-type Pokemon. Height: 0.3m. Weight: 1.7kg. It can use the fire-type technique “Flame Charge.”
Elicitel – A “generation” electric/normal-type Pokemon. Height: 0.5m. Weight: 6.0kg. It has a new technique called “Parabola Charge,” which heals its own HP while damaging surrounding enemies.
Gogoat – A “ride” grass-type Pokemon. Height: 1.7m. Weight: 91.0kg. It can use the grass-type technique “Horn Leech.” You can ride/mount this Pokemon in the field (e.g. a Pokemon bicycle).
Pokemon X and Y is set in the Karos region. Its main city is Miare City—the one with the Eiffel Tower-like structure we’ve seen in previous media. Here, we see the main character riding a Gogoat.

When you start up the game, like previous Pokemon games, you’ll be able to select between male and female characters. X and Y goes a bit further, however, with limited character customization. You’ll be able to change a character’s hair and skin color.

The scans also show the game’s world map, Miare City artwork, new tablet-like Pokedex, and the new region’s Pokemon trainer battles.

First up is new gym trainer Violet – you can see her here – and she’s a keen photographer based in Santalune City, a pleasant place full of parks and other nice things. You first learn of Violet after bumping into her big sister Alexa, who also happens to be a journalist working from Lumiose City.

Violet’s gym is focused on bug type Pokemon and is littered with spiders webs that must be carefully navigated with advice from Violet. It sounds unhygienic at best.

Next, we’ve got more details on four new Pokemon that were revealed last week. Just click their names to see them. Litleo is a fire-type bear cub whose Noble Roar move will lower its opponent’s attack stat, while Flabébé is a new fairy type whose flower comes in a variety of colours. Its move Fairy Wind summons a wind blast that is effective against dragons.

Scatterbug is a new bug-type that evolves into Spewpa, and then into butterfly Vivillon. Scatterbug can slow down enemies using String Shot, Spewpa can use Protect at the start of a turn to negate the enemy’s next attack, while Vivillon knows Struggle Bug, a move that lowers its opponent’s special attacks.

Starting area Vaniville Town has also been described by Nintendo in a statement which reads, “Once a player has chosen to play as a male or female Trainer, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y begins in Vaniville Town. Step outside the house you just moved to and soon meet four new friends that will embark on a journey around the Kalos region with you. These four friends — Shauna, Tierno, Trevor, and Serena (if you play as a boy) or Calem (if you play as a girl)— are unique individuals.”
