All we have is a 100x75 gif of the start screen, and since the title is tentative even that could change lol.

If it involves "Daemon Brides" though it shouldn't be far off from Arcana Heart stylistically. Substitute goth chicks for school chicks and you are half way there. I wonder if Examu themselves are making it.

Why couldn't Agent 9 have been the vs. fighter and this a 2D beat 'em up...

Painfully obvious the Japanese are still paranoid about making a 2D game that isn't a vs. fighter. Oriental Legend 2 however is currently crazy popular in Taiwan/China/Singapore.

Oriental Legend 2 has also had a horrendously limited distribution in Japan though; apparently barely any arcades have it. However, I still think that if a Japanese company were to make a 2D belt scroll action game (Examu or Arc for example) it would get solid play in Japanese arcades. One of these companies just needs to grow the balls to do so.

Yeah, I mean wtf, it's not like there aren't already A BILLION 2D fighting games in arcades already, with ANOTHER billion coming out in the next few months.

Still, you have to wonder whether Examu or Arc even want to make a 2D beat 'em up. Perhaps it's not so much about the financial risk (Examu seems to have the balls to do anything); perhaps their bosses/directors/programmers simply do not happen to like these kinds of games... That would be one explanation.

No, I'm sure they are fans of the genre. Do you know about the Guilty Gear game Arc released for PSP not long ago? It's a full-fledged belt scroll action game. Check it:

http://www.jp.playstation.com/software/ ... 05158.html

The problem of course, is that it's on the fucking PSP.

Nope, never realized it's actually a beat 'em up. PSP or not it looks great. At least it's not on the DS!

Translations of some of the above-linked sources from the SRK thead:

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=154754

Jeez, there’s barely any info on this, even in Japanese!

The article text indicates that the details on the system are not clear, but they’re keeping an eye out for the game (way to get the scoop, gaming press... >_> ).

The caption for the lower-left picture states:

“The main point is the word ‘contract’. Could it be that the female on the left and the desirable character have entered into a contract?”

Notes: the ‘contract’, 契約, is supposed to be pronounced ‘engage’ for whatever Engrish reason though it probably plays into the ‘bride’ aspect.

The blurb on the bottom reads something like “Fighting that begins based on White and Black contracts!!”

Daemon Bride

- The judgement of the power of White; the defiance of the love of Black; the Contract is the key to Tokyo.

In this double-feature on Examu’s new works, we introduce the completely new production Daemon Bride. Daemon Bride is a fighting game with an Angel vs. Demon theme and a fantasy world as the backbone. We don’t know the exact details of the game’s system, but you fight with weapons of power received from a Contract (Engage) with an angel or a demon. Also, if Arcana Heart is a fighting game aimed at the guys, it is not an exaggeration to say that this game will be charming to the ladies. With charming male characters, a complexly intertwined story, and gorgeous voice acting comparable to theatrical anime, it’s chock-full of things that the gamer girls will like. In addition to the work itself, a drama CD and theme song CD will go on sale, and there are plans to expand into other forms of media from there. But first, to introduce the concerning story and the two main characters:

Story.
It has been seven years since the great calamity that assailed the Kantō region.
What was once Tōkyō is now a city blockaded by a barrier, and has undergone a distinctive revival.

--Kyōritsu Stella Gakuen--
Making a “Contract” (Engage) with beings that transcend human knowledge,
those with the mighty power in their hands have collected.
At the academy, they have guided those who have power to straighten their paths,
in order to protect the equilibrium of the world.
However, those who dissent from the academy’s ideology also exist.

Some want power for the sake of their own convictions,
and some will throw away everything for the sake of just one love.

The desires clash, and mayhem and disorder spread.
The closed Tokyo now enters the act of fighting.

“To the corrupt world, the Justice of White–”
Sumeragi Kuon [Sumeragi uses the character for “emperor”; “Kuon” uses the characters for “eternity”] (v: Miyano Mamoru)

The student council executive chair of Kyōritsu Stella Gakuen. Scholarship also places him as a top genius in the academy. Calm and composed, serious and honest. Can get to be overly fastidious, but his popularity is devoted. Originally a classmate with Reizei, they both defended the order of the academy, but....

“Dyed black, for your sake”
Abane Reizei (v: Taniyama Kishō)
Originally the student council executive vice chair of Kyōritsu Stella Gakuen. He was once called Kuon’s right arm, but for whatever reason he lost interest in the academy, and was ousted from the student council executive body. He hates to be restricted; he has a free and uninhibited personality.

Director Serizawa’s comments:
Daemon Bride is a new kind of game that will be just as fun as fighting games are; so that you can enjoy a refreshing sense, we are developing a fighting game of a type that has not been seen so far. We will also introduce many fascinating characters. Please wait for it!

Some great sprite work there. Very colorful. The size of the sprites still bothers me though. I haven't seen any zoomed-out screens either. It might be very awkward to play if there's no zooming out...

Two more light shades and the characters could be Street Fighter 1 quality.

Actually, there are some nice details here that most other cel-style high-res FTGs I've seen don't have, like the metallic effect on the belt on the bottom screen.

Should we talk about tako-arm yet?

Only after the proper what's-going-on-with-those-lifeless-backgrounds rant!

Do you remember this? We can't ask for Metal Slug-quality graphics in high resolutions. Complex shading and non-flat colors just aren't the same without scanlines; check again those screenshots from Re-Bout and whatnot. If they don't take the Odin Sphere/KOF XII route, which is really expensive, there's only the cel-style approach. As such, DB's sprites don't look too bad to me. Another different thing is their concept, the early on-paper design, which is especially awful. We should be differentiating between them.

Dawn is such a great parody of "big guy with an arm thing" character design I don't care if it was intentionally parodic or not. Also, "Dawn".

Search "デモンブライド"

Makes you wonder why so many fighting game fans are playing comparatively primitive games like SF4 and KOF12 when games like this are around. I suppose any group of gamers is susceptible to the blind brand loyalty of the average ten year old Wii owner.
