Depictions of games in the media

There is an episode in Breaking Bad, can't remember which but I think it was in season 4 at some point, where Aaron Paul is playing what looks like Rage with a light gun on a 60-inch or so TV. It is the best depiction of gameplaying I've ever seen in a movie. The only bad thing about it is that... he's playing Rage with a light gun, so it's bogus. Or did they ask id to modify the game to work with a light gun? But how would he move around then?

So in order to make the game look so cool, they had to lie about how it really plays. Then again artists lie about everything they depict, in order to make it look good in their art (and understandably so: would the segment have looked so cool if Jesse had been sitting on a desk moving a mouse around?), so you can't really hold it against them. And consider the magnitude of the accomplishment: they made a compelling artwork about someone engaging with another artwork! The only way to top that would be to make a somehow compelling clip of someone watching the episode of Breaking Bad where Aaron Paul plays Rage with a light gun!

It's Season 4, Episode 7:

Trivia

  • In the teaser, Jesse is playing the video game, RAGE. In the game, Gale's name can be seen on a wall in reverse.
  • RAGE was released two months after the episode aired (October 20), and certainly after it was finished filming, so it must be assumed that id Software, created a test demo just for the creators.
