Didn't dodge jumping make it into UT2003 and Unreal Championship (Xbox) at about the same time? I thought that removing that, along with increasing the run speed, was done to make UT3 more like UT99. (And I don't think it was the dumb console kids who migrated back to UT99 after not finding UT200X to their liking.)

Also, something about throwing weapons.

Though if it is a matter of developers not implementing what they considered to be bugs in the first games(s), then those changes, whether they make the game more or less complex, have little to do with consoles.

And the point is? That is editing ini files, and on release the big issue with UT3 was that ini changes did not stick, but would reset when you logged in to play. Sure for some people it worked, but for me personally, I know that it didn't.

And also, it was in the ini file, not an option in the menu... And console players can't really go fucking about in the ini files can they?

That it is possible to throw weapons in UT3. Under some conditions. I didn't know if you were aware of that, and if you weren't maybe you'd like to know.

I'd assume that anyone complaining about UT3 being dumbed down for consoles wouldn't touch the console versions anyway, and that the problem was that the PC version suffered from that dumbing down. If we're dealing with people playing the 360 version and complaining that it is dumbed down, then fair enough I suppose. For a PC FPS player it should be business as usual to fuck around with config files.

Well, yeah, I was aware of that, and of the other things you could play around with in the ini files. The thing is, is that a lot of those things would reset on logging in to play online, which means they basically did not exist. Even something as basic as 1st to 3rd person cam toggle was cut out of the options, and had to be done via ini hack, which wouldn't work online... Which shows why just fucking around with the config files, as you put it in the next quote, doesn't give the PC player any advantage over a console player. They still have to suffer the cut down options.

All right. I assumed the changes not sticking online was some bug or something (and probably fixed by now), since you said it worked for some. At least it'd suck less if it was like that.

And like, it sounds pretty reasonable to assume that consoles had something to do with it being ditched from the options menu anyway. I was just surprised that it wasn't possible, so I googled it, and from the results it looked like it was possible. Kind of.

Just a note on this commentary:

James wrote:But they did give us some things: feign death for opponents who don't regularly put a slug in a body on the ground to make sure it's dead

While its true that UT2004 had no feign death, the first UT did.

The review is right on spot. UT2004 even had an IRC client while this one didn't let you enter a server IP until it was implemented timidly in one of the latest patches.

What Icycalm said about bastardization of arcade games by console centered design applies perfectly to UT3 and TF2 when it comes to PC games, for different reasons obviously.
