[360] Guilty Gear 2 -Overture-

Unread postby icycalm » 24 Jul 2007 15:16

Guilty Gear goes 3D, perhaps even for good. Are there people out there who really need yet another generic 3D hack-and-slasher? Because it does look awfully generic:

Not to mention nowhere near as good as DMC 4.

Probably just a side story for Mr BadGuy himself. :)

That's interesting and all, but why? Guilty Gear has a stranglehold on the title of "Prettiest 2D Fighter." It's entire allure is in the artwork. Unrivaled character illustration, and wild, over-the-top animations. That's why we (I'm assuming) picked up GG in the first place. 3D's gonna steal its sparkle... D:

It's because "the average gamer" thinks of 2D as some kind of relic from days gone by and as deluded as they are, their collective dollars command a lot of attention.

What I can't quite understand is why anyone would want to make an action game based on a fighting game. Does crap like Mortal Kombat Mythologies really sell that well?

3rd person action games are getting a bit like platformers in the mid 90's. The shelves are absolutely flooded with them. As a result I think it's kind of hard to work up much excitement about them.

I don't really think it's that great looking- I remember my friend praising it for hours, "pro-scan this" and blah blah blah, but in the end I was really dissapointed. Compared to SFIII it looks kinda poopy. But, yeah, alot of people think it's the best looking.

I thought it was because of the rediculous air combos?

I honestly don't think that GG can compare with SF3. The resolution is great point, yeah. But the animation is a little bit unrealistic. In the other side, SF3 has the most realistic & smooth animations we will ever see in a 2D game. Plus, the art is really good: it's quite unusual to see so well drawn muscles in a japanese game.

GG is a good game, but if I have to choose then, fuck GG

Guilty Gear's appeal is 50% the graphics and 50% the fast, flowing action and extremely deep system. Which is just about right, as far as I am concerned.

Back on-topic, here's an interview with Ishiwatari on GG2 (also includes lots of screens):

From this interview, and looking more closely at the scans, it seems there will be some strategy elements. You move units around a map in real-time, and once you engage the enemy you take control of your chosen character...

I am reminded a bit of Chaos Legion, for some reason.

This sounds a lot like the Xbox Kingdom Under Fire games, which are very awesome. Since Phantagram's latest entry into this series isn't based on the previous two games and is more of a Diablo-esque one, I'm guessing Microsoft paid Arc Systems to fill the void left behind by them.

This Xbox 360 exclusiveness (I think) explains why there was a Guilty Gear theme preloaded onto my NTSC-J 360 but there wasn't a single announcement of any of their games related to this series going onto Microsoft's console.

Just judging from screenshots it looks kinda shitty and derivative, like a mix of Summoner and Dungeon Siege. I'm hoping it plays better than it looks, but it'd be nice to see a little more of the stylistic touches that have helped to set Guilty Gear apart from the pack. Time will tell, I guess.

Agreed, except that I've noticed them becoming sloppier and sloppier. Half the time, the camera is all over the place and the characters move like wooden dolls. I actually busted up laughing when I saw the protagonist of Shadow of the Colossus walk around.

It's hard to do that with 3D graphics, especially when your engine suxxorz.

Official site is live, though it's only a splash page:

And another preview with some new screens:

First off, review and an article by me from a while back:

http://insomnia.ac/reviews/xbox360/guiltygear2overture/
http://insomnia.ac/commentary/the_futur ... ilty_gear/

In regards to the article, now that we've seen how terribly GG2 sold and with the Blazblue announcement, it looks like there won't be another 3D Guilty Gear any time soon, if ever. Which I guess is fine by me.

Now as for GG2, apparently Aksys plans to release it in the US in the third quarter of 2008 with a bunch of extras. According to Siliconera (which, as usual, doesn't cite any sources), they are saying "new items, skills, tweaks, and additional modes", though I am not too sure what they mean by "skills", and the "new modes" part also sounds fishy. I just can't imagine Arcsys would want to waste any more time and money on this game at this point.
