One way to get a quick idea of how the Japanese feel about the current platform situation is to take a look at how their multiplatform blogs are structured. This is what I figured out today by chance when browsing one of them:
http://remoon.blog15.fc2.com/Notice the order in which he lists the various platforms on his sidebar, and also the number of posts he's made in each category (you have to scroll down quite a ways and keep an eye on the left of the page):
* PS3 (2929)
* PS2 (215)
* PSP/PSV (2706)
* Wii/WiiU (1972)
* NDS/3DS (2281)
* Xbox360 (1428)
Apart from that, the structure also tells you something else that is important: that he's not a hardcore gamer -- not by my standards at any rate. Otherwise he would have listed the platforms by
power (the
only way to list them) and he would have included the PC for christsake (and right at the top moreover). Here's a hardcore gamer list of the formats he included, plus the PC:
PC
360/PS3
WiiU/Wii
PS2
PSV/PSP
3DS/DS
Of course tons of other formats are missing (he includes, for example, the PS2 but neglects the Xbox, GC and DC, at the very least -- which also tells you a lot about how he, and Japanese gamers in general, think about these formats), but you can still see the huge differences in mindset between me and him.
