EOJ wrote:Guwange was finally released for XBLA today. Personally, I never cared for the original PCB version. In fact, I’ve probably only played it a handful of times. While I like the art and music, the scoring sucks (and is broken) and I hated the goofy option that was hard to control.
Nevertheless, I was looking forward to the XBLA release. But it seems I should not have gotten my hopes up. Incredibly, unlike all previous ports of vertical Cave games (even stuff by 5pb), you cannot play this on a 4:3 CRT in TATE without horrendous borders on the top, bottom, and sides, due to the forced 16:9 mode in the game. This is completely ridiculous. Even budget stuff like King of Fighters Sky Stage has 4:3 TATE.
Like the slapped together DSII Arcade port, once again we are not able to enter initials for our high scores. THANKS CAVE.
The menus are cumbersome and unintuitive, but basic things like control config and screen rotation are in there. Replay uploads/downloads and online rankings are included too. The replays are surprisingly option-rich, allowing you to fastforward up to 32x speed, and slowdown to at least 1/16th speed (I didn’t try more than that) whenever you like. There’s a pause button for the replays as well.
The game looks decent on a 16:9 HDTV, but I can’t stand playing it for more than a half hour as my eyes begin to get tired from the blocky or blurry screen. The screen/menu options are similar to previous Cave ports. There is a smoothing filter that’s passable, but no scanline options. Strangely, there appear to be a lot of visual options that are grayed out and inaccessible. Who releases a game with visual config options that you can see, but can’t use? Cave does, that’s who.
The real reason to buy this is for the two extra modes – Blue version and Arrange 360. Arrange 360 is a lot of fun, and easy to pick up and play. It uses dual stick control, and after recently playing Strike Witches X360, it’s nice to have another dual stick shooter.
One thing going for this port is the slowdown replication is very accurate. They did a really good job there.
Overall Guwange XBLA is a disappointment as a port of the arcade game. It exists in some strange place of mediocrity between the iphone stuff that you play while rubbing your fingers over a tiny screen, and the quality X360 ports that rival their PCB versions. Furthermore, it strikes fear into the hearts of Cave fans who are anticipating DFK 1.5 and MMP/PS. Will those ports also lack 4:3 TATE?? Is this a new trend for Cave? Despite its problems, for $10, Guwange is still worth it for the extra modes if you have a 16:9 HDTV. They are fun modes unavailable to consumers in any other form. For arcade mode, you’re better off playing the free version in MAME that’s been available for eons. If you own the PCB, this sub-par version isn’t likely to compel you to sell it off.
