Jon R. wrote:It does more for the concept of tedium than it does for open-ended games. You've got your "realism", but only when it's guaranteed to make things not fun, and your gameyness only where it can most effectively enhance how not fun the realistic aspects are. Ironsights, great. Enemies that take roughly 20 shots before dying, setting free at least a pint of blood with each shot goes right with that. It'll be a miracle if the bullet hits what you're aiming at anyway, so good luck with that headshot from 20 feet away.

Oh, plus there's weapon degradation for no other reason than to have yours break, forcing you to pick up an enemy's. This is super, since despite being a haven for mercenaries, not a single fucking person knows how to clean or maintain their weapon. So if you pick theirs up, it'll jam just about every 5 seconds because they never carry anything but the poorest quality. The game even tells you as much. There's also no real indication when something's going to break, so it's guaranteed that you'll be in the middle of a fight when Hey! Look at that, the barrel of my gun literally just popped off!

Oh, and the favorite friend of open-world games. Do you like driving? I hope so, because every single mission you get is going to be halfway across the goddamned map. Across endlessly twisty roads. Peppered with guard points. And just to top it off, every single car you pass will go out of its way to fuck with you, even if you're in a truck with a mounted machinegun and they're alone in a compact car.

Story's great wonderful voice acting every single character delivers their lines like this for god knows what reason hey it's Africa guess everyone's on a speed bender that would explain a lot

Are you up for social commentary? Because the only currency is rough diamonds. There are 200-something cases hidden around the game world, and they contain about 1-3 diamonds each when even the crappiest weapons cost around 10. This is a heady take on the futility of the blood diamond trade; each time you find one and it goes "Yup! Only 200 more of these to find!", you'll profoundly wonder how in the shit it's supposed to be worth bothering with.

The only thing going for it is the engine. I've about had it, but if nothing else it has the best sunrises and sunsets i've ever seen in a game.

Jon R. wrote:It very easily could, if it didn't constantly get in the way of itself. What makes it so irritating is that driving is set up to be great because the roadsigns make it possible to navigate without having the map open and the vehicle handling doesn't suck. It'd be great if you could just drive along and absorb the fantastic scenery, but every 5 seconds you have to deal with another car coming after you specifically, or a guardpost. It can't seep in because you're constantly being interrupted.

Same with the enemies taking so many hits. You'd like to creep around the tall savanna grass picking them off, but in reality they're just going to go "HEY GUYS, SOMEONE SHOT ME IN THE HEAD! HE'S OVER THERE!"

It'll probably be really worth playing once someone mods out the checkpoint respawns, the driver aggro, the weapon degradation, and the nerf bullets. Until then, if you have a PC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl sounds like it's up your alley.

Jon R. wrote:Yeah, Far Cry 2 is right up there on my list of games that completely and utterly invalidate any opinion you have on any game ever if you say you like it. I sucked it down hoping to at least get a humorous walkthrough out of it, but even staying in character there's only so many times you can mock the exact same goddamned transit sequence or mission structure.

MESSAGE TO GAME INDUSTRY:
Go ahead and make any number of completely needless design mistakes that all but prove you like randomly slapping elements together to show off your engine. People will complain, then once they go away in utter disgust you're left with all the retards whose life experiences amount to fantasy anyway, and they'll be more than happy to constantly spew about how being assaulted by 20 hours of nonsequiturs is the most immersive experience they've ever had.

Apparently "emergent gameplay" has finally settled on meaning "don't actually design anything and let the player deal with it". Someone please put a bullet in Chris Remo's head.

1/4

A living, breathing world, they told me, two sides at war with me in the middle. My only goal to take out an arms dealer named the Jackal supplying both sides, and the freedom to go about doing it any way I could think of. Join one side, play ‘em both against each other, just fuck around until you stumble across this Jackal character urinating out in the bush even. Whatever you want. Kill a guy on one side and the guy below him moves up to take his place. Encounter the characters you didn’t choose to play as out there doing their own thing to make friends or enemies of. Start a fire that will spread across the savannah. Your actions have an effect on everything. Bullshit.

All lies. Propaganda stirred up by the suits to generate some interest in their otherwise unremarkable big budget first person shooter. Somebody not so much as excitedly fibbed a bit in the prerelease hype as constructed an elaborate web of deception.

Here’s how the real game goes. You take a mission from one of the indistinguishably different factions. Listen to what they say. Take the file full of important mission documents they hand you. Go outside. Throw the file full of important mission documents in a dumpster in the alley. Forget everything they just told you because once the briefing is done your buddy always immediately calls you up to tell you to do some different shit instead. There’s never any reason not to help your buddy out, it doesn’t screw up your other mission and doing so is what upgrades your safe houses to something other than a worthless save point, being that you can save anywhere.

Except on the consoles, then you can only save at the safe houses. Why? Because that’s the kind of mind that was at work on this game here, a broken one. The mind of a man who creates one thing, and explains it as something else. The mind of a no good filthy god damn liar.

These extra special mission deals your buddy has you do, I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be some kind of spy vs. spy, counteracting their shit while making it look like you still got the job done double agent type thing, or if he’s just doing what I just got paid to do, except doing a more thorough job of it and for free. Either way he makes sure you go way the hell out of your way every god damn time to do this crap, and that’s where the real meat and potaters of the game comes in, the walking or driving from one place to the next.

The map is covered with these encampment guard post type places with about 4-5 soldiers in each of them. And despite being supposedly 50 god damn kilometers of terrain (these grifters probably count the empty filler bullshit at the edges as part of that) a lot of it is long roads surrounded by high unclimbable walls. So no matter where you get told to go odds are you going have to go through 2 or 3 of these camps on the way there at the very least. The only way to avoid them is to get out of your vehichle and sneak by, leaving your wheels behind and having to walk very slowly the whole way to your destination. It’s either that or shoot your way through, which you might as well since it’s hardly challenging, even on the “hardcore” difficulty mode I chose to play on, thinking I was in for some serious african civil war hell on earth shit and wanting to make a challenge of it, so it just ends up becoming very boring very quickly.

It never fails, everytime; you could be just walking along minding your own business but soon as they even catch a glimpse of you on the horizon you’ll hear the soon to be familiar sound of machine gun fire then, wait a few seconds, yes there it is, that VROOOOM sound of the jeep starting up to come run your ass over. Every god damn time. Not to mention the best part, which is once you complete the mission, reach your goal, whatever, you gotta turn around and go through them AGAIN on the way back. Yeah they’re back already. Part of that living breathing world shit they talked about.

This isn’t so much a Far Cry sequel as it is a homage to Deus Ex. At least I think so. Wasn’t there one with the subtitle “The Invisible War?” That sounds like what they were going for here. No matter which side you take missions for they feed you with some bullshit line how “this is a ’secret’ mission, nobody knows about it so even our own army will be taking every chance to blow you away. Feel free to massacre the hell out of them as you see fit. Huh… didn’t think this one out to good did I? Shit, well just come back for another one when you’re done I guess.”

I can’t even really tell that there’s a war going on here at all, or how many sides there are to this theoretical conflict. I’ve only got their word to go on. The only conflict I ever see breaking out is the entire continent of Africa versus Me. And despite being in Africa there’s no civilians or children or child soldiers. Yeah, I’ve got this foolish dream of a war game depicting something more like an actual war someday. This one can’t even get the two seperate sides killing each other part down, here everyone populating the game is an adult soldier, ready to shoot you, chase you down in a jeep for miles, whatever it takes to kill you but only ever you, the very second they catch your scent on the wind.

I took the jewish guy for my character by the way. He was fairly plain and nondescript looking, while everyone else had tattoos, mohawks, or a long list of military experience, while I think his only listing was “smuggling contraband,” something I think everyone has done at one time or another in their life, so you just know he’s actually the biggest badass of the whole bunch. I’ve seen enough action films to know an empty file means they’re some kind of black ops killing machine.

A little ways into the game though I thought about going back to play as someone browner, thinking maybe everyone was chasing after me in their jeeps for no god damn reason because I was white. That might have been kind of awesome, so obviously this was early in the game, before I fully realized how high the stack of bullshit it had been built on really was. Later I figured a game that can’t even distinguish between the two different sides in it’s own war probably isn’t going to take the time to distinguish between skin color.

Still, for all they know I could be Brad Pitt coming to look at the poor starving African children or even their boss coming to inspect the setup and make sure it’s up to snuff. They’ve got no clue, you could be anybody. And if there are camps that are supposed to represent the two different factions I can’t tell them apart. It’s just you versus the whole of Africa. Though somehow in the introduction the taxi driver can drive you around without trouble every time and show off all sorts of amazing shit that will never happen again and/or in-game. That’s right, zebra’s and gazelle crossing the fucking road would be an exciting god damn development to break up the tedious monotony of these nonstop enemy camp firefights.

This all kind of reminds me of Assassin’s Creed, another Ubisoft game where they a had a good 2-3 hours of game stretched out to, hell did anyone have the patience to figure out how long that game really went on for? For this one, before the game came out they were saying the single player would be a 50 hour game. Hilarious if that turned out to be the one thing out of their god damn mouths that wasn’t a complete lie fabricated out of thin air. Thin air! Meaning not even any base materials from the actual real-life game were used in the creation of it! Though maybe all that talk of procedurally generated free from open ended bullshit was actually true and they just either left it switched off by mistake or it just happens to generate a real lame story for me every time. You got the generic big budget half assed Xbox-to-PC FPS port Game this time, try again!

All I can figure is they gave up trying to get all that awesome shit they talked about in early previews working and just hoped all the encounters with the little camps would just have to make do with being an enjoyable and big part of the game. Like, “what will happen this time? How will the encounter turn out?” But really, every camp has practically the same little layout and how many times is a jeep coming after you supposed to blow you away with amazement? Well gosh darn will the guy run me over or hit the tree this time? Anything can happen! Though I’ll at least say the enemies in the game seem to be equiped with some decent AI brains from what I’ve seen, and I imagine if you’re the sort of person who likes to stare at screenshots of a game in awe of how much like a photograph they look like, well then you can probably find some way of getting around or ignoring how god damn boring this one is.

The game Ubisoft were describing in the early previews, or were letting websites misleadingly describe it as, was a game surely every man has wanted to play. Certainly a game any man who’s ever seen Die Hard or Yojimbo has imagined himself at some point or another. Alone in a hostile environment, only one real ultimate goal and the methods to go about it anyway you could imagine. Play it like an elaborate game of chess, ten moves ahead of the other characters in the game, or maybe shit just doesn’t go as planned and you just have to wing it, go in guns firing and hope for the best. The kind of thing your grandpa or dad imagines must be going on when he sees you playing one of them crazy vidcons.

I guess that’s kind of the ultimate game, or a kind of one, in a way. You could take it and throw any number of different settings or themes into it. Just imagine this technology falling into the hands of EA. With some kind of computah masheen AI brain thinking up the story for you as you play along, does that mean the days of corny dialogue and nonsense plots thought up by programmers whose life experiences came only by proxy through shitty hollywood movies would be over? It’s a depressing thought. Perhaps it is all for the best that Far Cry 2 was, much like your membership in the in-game factions and the factions themselves, just a pretend Far Cry 2, not the real one they advertised.

Thinking about it now I’m wondering where the lies really end, if they go all the way into the game itself. It’s obvious there’s no real war going on. For all we know the country has known peace for a hundred years now. That tutorial only show off firefight in the street at the beginning? An elaborately staged deception. The people handing out missions in the cease-fire zone? CIA actors. The guards in the camps and lack of women and children? They’ve been warned about a convicted pedophile and rapist wandering the countryside armed with weapons.

My god, just how deep down the rabbit hole does this go? It’s all some sort of Prisoner/Nowhere Man-esque mind game. The Jackal, is he even real? That guy claiming to be him in the beginning was probably just some part time actor who went home afterwards. This also explains the unenthusiastic line delivery of everyone I’ve met. Because lines in a script are all they are to these people. Will they just keep stringing me along, seeing how long I’ll put up with these never ending enemy camps and empty promises of an environment nothing like the one I’m in?

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this sort of thing. Even recently, in that new Band of Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway game. There’s an early mission where you see some Nazi rapscallions in the distance drag a woman off into a barn. Getting the strong feeling that they aren’t throwing her a suprise party, you run towards the barn bringing along a little party of your own. A rescue party. Unfortunately, you only get there just in time to see her lifeless body dangle from the rafters. Or so you think. The truth is the woman swinging around up there is just a double left behind to keep you occupied while the real one was taken elsewhere. I haven’t found her yet, but I’m betting she might not even show up until the next game. Probably either in Hitler’s bunker or on a small Pacific island.

If you’re wondering what the point of all this Band of Brothers In Arms business is, let me just say: published by Ubisoft. I’m on to their sick game.

I had some hopes for this game. The first one was awesome, but I guess Ubi must have raped it, except if both the above guys are waaaay off base, which seems unlikely at this point.

One issue I didn't see mentioned is how restrictive the weapon system is. You can only have one primary weapon and one secondary weapon equipped at a time. I wouldn't have a problem with this if it wasn't for the overpowered four-chambered grenade launcher making every other primary weapon worthless. This doesn't leave much of a choice.

I really wanted to like this game. It is beautiful and the enemies can be very interesting. I have a high tolerance for tedious crap, but it was just too boring in the end.

This game is a good example of an incorrectly-labeled "sequel." Crysis is the sequel to Far Cry.

So your problem is not "how restrictive the weapon system is". Your problem is how unbalanced it is.

Besides, if I found myself stranded in some African hellhole, and had a choice of different weapons to lug around, I'd probably opt for the four-chambered grenade launcher myself instead of, say, a handgun.

I don't know about this particular case, because I haven't played the game, but "balance" is not always a good thing, nor does it always make sense to strive for it. And there are various ways to define it.

Well as far as your arsenal goes you can have three weapons with you, a slot for one considered heavy ( mg's, missile launchers and the like) one for your primary (shotguns and rifles) and one for your secondary ( pistols, small machine guns, m1 grenader, etc)...

I usually roamed around with a Dragunov, Uzi and the very useful M1 'nader. You can also buy various ammo straps for your guns, you can even upgrade the amount of syrettes you carry.

Also, the buddies are pretty retarded because they can't receive any orders whatsoever, they just bail you out and hang around for a while. For the console player they're like an extra-shot at life, but in PC-land where we've got not only saves, but the quick kind of saves, they're simply useless.

I frankensteined some gameplay footage here if anyone is interested, it's pretty long, but it shows some of the retarded enemy behavior and decent gunplay, not just mucking about in bushes and fixing car engines like most of the stuff you'll come across.

That footage shows how piss-easy the game is on the lower difficulty levels. You can just park your Jeep in the middle of an area and mow down people as they pop out.

On Hardcore, you'll die in 2-4 shots, so you're constantly forced to find cover. Of course, unrestricted saving on the PC ruins the tension, as you said, but at least the mission locations gain some flavor: fighting in the shantytown feels different than fighting in the trainyard when you have to use the environment to your advantage instead of barreling in and blowing everyone to hell.

Also in the video: glitches aside, the AI is better than average for an FPS and shows some uncommon behaviors, such as crawling away when wounded and trying to rescue injured allies. I found them to be competent at using cover, and often saw them firing at / investigating my last known location after I sneaked away.

another Riposte wrote:You can only have one primary weapon and one secondary weapon equipped at a time. I wouldn't have a problem with this if it wasn't for the overpowered four-chambered grenade launcher making every other primary weapon worthless.
Really? I thought the sniper rifles were the obvious choice of primary weapon, since getting flanked is so dangerous. For each category, I'd say there are a couple tough decisions, such as stopping power (Desert Eagle) vs. fire rate and increased ammunition (Uzi). Yeah, some weapons are useless, but each choice does require some tactical consideration.

Anyway, the two reviews at top nailed it: the abundance of filler is really what kills this game. I'll probably never finish my Hardcore playthrough; whenever I'm driving across the map I keep thinking about how a better game would have let me shoot fifty guys already, and not just random ones puttering around a campfire or driving in a compact.

Yeah totally agree with you, shantytown and train yard were cool settings when put against farms and other abandoned areas you come across, with a big yard in the middle were you can just mow down guys from your jeep. The small airport was nice too.

Although I still consider stuff like enemies clustering around live grenades really disturbing man... I mean really wtf. I tried to play around with them as much as possible and apart from crawling away there really is no redeeming factor to them, I've played the game on hardcore and I really didn't see any improvement in their aiming... Never tried on infamous though, I was strapped of all patience. I don't think the enemies actually improve with the difficulty level, just their density and damage. Which is pretty standard these days...

You should try Warhead on Delta by the way...

Uh, I meant to say Infamous rather than Hardcore, actually--I forgot that Hardcore is not the hardest. The difference is mostly the damage their shots do (along with a restricted amount of health and ammo you can carry, of course). I think their accuracy improves, but it's hard to say--on Normal I didn't really care if they hit me or not and didn't pay much attention to it.

You've made me curious so I looked into it. I've got the game on my drive but I just couldn't bare that goddamn cab ride again so I googled it...

Another thing that's different is a lack of cross-hairs, just iron sights, Call of Cthulhu/Red Orchestra mode, you can't enable them. They should have made saving available only at the safe houses in this mode, it would seem pretty sensible to do this in the whole game actually. It would also keep your buddies from being utterly useless. Oh and your life chunks still regenerate if not empty, I'd take that out too in infamous, heh.

pretty late L.E...

Am I the only one who thinks "A.I." is a very misleading term and should be banished from gaming until further notice?

I don't understand the reason for all this deep-rooted anger in Far Cry 2. The first review sounds more up the alley of the original Far Cry than the sequel.

In my experience, Far Cry 1 bordered on the absurd in every respect. On the harder difficulties, enemies could spot your character crouching in a bush from a mile away. Efforts at stealth almost always resulted in a full-blown firefight. 2/3rds through the story, the game dropped any attempts at strategy or believability for a race of supermutants. The only way to dispatch with this new enemy was tediously unloading your clip from the assault rifle, retreating in a circle and repeating. Whenever you did fuck up, the entire enemy position would light up, every base in a 10 mile radius would empty and they would all run straight at your character. I can't remember how many times I've jammed my quick load key. It's linear, primitive and, frankly, boring.

Far Cry 2 didn't attempt to mimic any of that. FC2's focus is in an immersive, strategic, non-linear shooter. There are no puzzles, fanciful plot elements, or supermutants. It's just you, your choice of armaments, and an intelligent group of burly rapists. The AI will flank, form-up and follow you.

You're given an objective and can proceed any way you want to. Played right -- on the hardest/second-to-hardest difficulty, planned out and intently executed -- it can be very rewarding. At its absolute, FC2 is a battle of wits. Haphazardly running into an enemy base will not only get you killed, but utterly humiliated -- which is why I understand it might be frustrating for the weak of mind.

Anger "in" Far Cry 2 makes no sense. I presume you mean "against" it. As for "deep-rooted" -- what the fuck is your problem? Are we not allowed to dislike a game now, or even hate it? If you have a problem with our "deep-rooted anger", then fuck off back to gamefaqs or wherever it is you came from.

Now as for your problem itself, I would say that the reason you don't understand people's dislike of the game is that you have shit tastes. Your summing up of the first game was beyond absurd, for one thing. Far Cry is nothing less than a videogame masterpiece, up there with Half-Life, Deus Ex and Halo in the FPS genre.

With waffling skills like this you should think about applying for a job at IGN.

Yes, because there were in the first game.

I'm going to agree with the negative criticism that the game has received so far, but I think that some of the positive criticism is a bit over the top.

The AI from what I saw was utterly hopeless, despite having superpowers. I was in the distance, and on higher ground than an enemy, shooting him with the basic sniper rifle.

He had a shotgun.

Did he try to run away? Nope! He tried to engage me in a firefight. With a shotgun. Of course, due to the AI superpowers he still managed to hit me a few times, but did very little damage.

Cover is entirely useless - the enemy just ignores it. One of my favourite moments was when, while crouching down in the grass and shooting people, someone decided to headshot me with a bazooka. At this point, my buddy appeared, grabbed me, and then walked us both off a cliff. The game resumed action somewhere in the opposite direction to where we were walking, and we were still being attacked.

Whoever said that this game was "immersive" must have been on some pretty strong shit. All of that combined with the "Enemies don't fight each other despite ostensibly being in a war, no weapon maintenance, no civilians, no child soldiers, etc etc" thing.

I don't know what you niggas are going on about, but I just came off my first hour with the game and from the start screen to... where I got to an hour later, the game was perfect down to the last pixel. Not a single complaint at all, and I can't even remember the last modern game for which I said such a thing. So I am going to have dinner, and then go back and start over on Hardcore, because if this really is as good as it has been so far I don't want to spoil the game for myself on Normal.

Keep playing. If you're still as excited as you are now after the seventy-sixth respawned guard post, seemingly endless driving, and repetitive-as-all-fuck missions, I will be amazed.

Yeah, two-three hours later and I am starting to see the problems. The endless driving does not bother me in the least, however: I could drive around all day if I knew that at the end of it I'd get to face an awesome mission. And if I died in it I wouldn't mind have to redo the entire drive each and every time. But like I said, the mission would have to be awesome, and so far, though passable, these missions sure ain't awesome.

Also, my interpretation of the difficulty levels:

Code: Select all
Casual    Not tried it yet
Normal    Easy
Hardcore  Normal
Infamous  Not tried it yet

You'll probably end up increasing the difficulty to Infamous before too long, which you can thankfully do without having to restart the game. I had increased the difficulty a couple of times before reaching the hardest setting while playing to keep the game challenging, as the enemies and situations you'll face remain largely the same even when your skills improve as you progress.

I just fired the game up to test this claim, and it's hardly accurate. Yes, tall grass seems to obscure only your vision and not the enemies', but it's easy to hide in the small bushes and other dense scrub. I'm sure there are places where they'll see right through the foliage, but I managed to hide and have them walk right past me plenty of times.

Thanks for the tip, Magnum, I was indeed at the point where I wanted to increase the difficulty further, but was under the impression I'd need to restart.

By the way, no one understands this game but me. Everyone is either a retarded journlolist whore who automatically loves every shiny new thing that comes out, or an ADD-suffering monkey who can't be bothered to take the time to play anything with any degree of attention. I MEAN JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE THIS GAME IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GEARS OR HALO!

I'll be sure to review the game at length once I am done with it.

From ABDN's (actually pretty decent) review I quoted earlier:

Though somehow in the introduction the taxi driver can drive you around without trouble every time and show off all sorts of amazing shit that will never happen again and/or in-game. That’s right, zebra’s [sic] and gazelle crossing the fucking road would be an exciting god damn development to break up the tedious monotony of these nonstop enemy camp firefights.

They do cross the road again, later in the game. I have in fact run over several of them.

What I find funny about the ABDN review, which I just re-read, and which is in fact among the best on that site, is that it does not contain any real analysis at all. Just as in Jon. R's comments I quoted in my OP: It's basically "I didn't like this, that and that" -- and that's the end of that.

But is that -- an analysis? Okay, you did not like these aspects -- how would you have made them differently if you were directing this project? What do you think made the game's director choose to include these aspects? Can it all really be ascribed to laziness or some other vague evil intentions to make a bad game? -- which is all the justification these "hardcore" gamers seem able to provide. But if you can offer no solutions to these "problems" you find with the game, then FOR ALL WE KNOW THEY MIGHT NOT EVEN BE PROBLEMS.

Meh. Honestly, there is no videogame analysis going on anywhere. People do not even understand what the word "analysis" means.

This is one of the extremely rare games which, though it is very hard in all good conscience to recommend to people, I still feel the need to single out and praise because it tries things that no other games are trying -- and should be trying. I am at 20% on Infamous and still playing, though, honestly, if I had any better games I'd be playing them instead. I have a package of six 360 games on the way currently (Raiden IV, Blazblue, GTA IV, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and The Orange Box), so I am sure that when they get here I'll stop playing this. Whether I pick it up again at some point afterwards is anyone's guess.

Oh and here's my updated interpretation of the difficulty options:

Code: Select all
Casual    Not tried it yet
Normal    Easy
Hardcore  Normal
Infamous  Hard-ish

Best thing so far was swimming to a mission, avoiding all the crappy checkpoints and then stealth sniping a target without anyone seeing me before sneaking off into the bush unseen (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

It's moments like this, if you are lucky or skillful/patient enough to experience them, that make the game's concept shine.

Unfortunately they are very rare/difficult to accomplish, so the game rarely shines.
