An IGN preview with quotes from product planner and producer David Cox:

Combat seems aimed at occupying a space between God of War and Ninja Gaiden. While Gabriel's "Combat Cross" bears quite a bit of resemblance to Kratos' various chained blades as it whirls around the battlefield, Cox emphasized the team's desire to make the game rewarding to players who put some time into the game's combat system. "We enjoy games like Street Fighter and the like, and we wanted the combat to be very fast moving. Button mashing can get players so far, but players need to mix up blocks and standard and ranged attacks. It's very strategic. If (they're not) thinking about what they're going to do, then they're going to get killed."
This seems to contradict Konami's emphasis on "bringing a bigger audience" to the series this generation. Cox admits that it's a complicated process to add a deep combat system to a game aimed a wider audience, but says the more challenging sections of the game come in measured doses.
