[360] [PS3] Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Unread postby another Riposte » 18 Apr 2010 07:33

So after all the rumors, apparently MvC3 finally got confirmed. No talk of an arcade version.

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2010/apr/ ... m-3-works/

All but official, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the works

Confirming the rumors posted the other day, PlanetXbox360 reported that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was shown at Capcom's Captivate event in Hawaii.

There's an embargo on the details, so you won't be seeing screen shots, movies and other things until early next week, but here's the notes they were able to get together.

• Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.

• The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.

• This will be another 2D fighter — gameplay-wise — but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.

• The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.

• The game will run in 1080p resolution.

• It will be a disc-based release.

• Apparently the game will have unlockables again.

• Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.

Given that SFIV is a rather slow game with a cast that's "balanced" to the point of being slightly boring, and MvC2 is incredibly fast-paced and notoriously broken, I'm having a tough time imagining what this hypothetical combination would look like.
I totally judge books by their cover. All the time. It's one of my values.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom. They'll probably reuse the engine.

Just a cutscene with none of the actual game shown, but I guess it confirms a few characters (like the Resident Evil 5 dude).

And some more info, the lol stuff ("deep story") aside:

http://kotaku.com/5518024/marvel-vs-cap ... e=true&s=i

The title, which will likely feature more than 30 characters to choose from and feature 3-on-3 tag team fighting, hits the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2011. There currently are no plans for an arcade, computer or Wii version of the title, Capcom tells Kotaku.

Like Capcom's popular Street Fighter IV, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will feature 3D characters fighting on a 2D plane, he said. The game won't, however, use the same sort of graphics found in Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV. Instead Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 will run on an "advanced version" of MT Framework, the same engine that powers the graphics of Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5.

The gameplay-free trailer shows that Wolverine, the Hulk, Iron Man, Street Fighter's Ryu, Darkstalker's Morrigan and Resident Evil's Chris Redfield will be in the game. It also hints at the appearance of Captain America, Super Skrull, Chun-Li, Deadpool, Felicia, Dante or Nero, Spencer or Wesker, Mephisto, Rad Spencer and Doctor Doom. The inclusion of Redfield in the game is indicative of the direction the game's developers are headed in terms of Capcom character selection, Killian said.

While the game could certainly support any number of characters, Niitsuma said that time constraints led the team to shoot for a bit more than 30 characters in the game.

While downloadable content for the game, most likely new characters, is certainly possible, no DLC plans have yet been locked in, said Capcom's Seth Killian.

Patrick Klepek wrote:Like Street Fighter IV, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 follows the design philosophy of maximizing depth while also minimizing complexity. You can have great depth within a simplistic design, argued Capcom, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is being crafted with an eye for taking that one step further. Making Marvel vs. Capcom 3's situation even more complex, however, is the complete explosion of Marvel characters in the last decade, as the result of their success in Hollywood. The audience for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is potentially much larger than with previous games and the types of consumers interested in this matchup will certainly be more than just fighting fans.

Well, isn't this just wonderful, guys? I hope it controls with just one button, make directional input optional (so it'll be easier to ban it later on in scrub tourneys) and they ship it with some pap and a set of diapers. The current fighting community will gladly embrace all kinds of handicapped.

Some information concerning the control scheme for this game:

Obviously something like that created an uproar which Seth responds to further in this link:

Seth Killian wrote:There is really no systemic reason why some MvC2 characters have Down-Toward + Hard Kick as a launcher, other have Down + Hard Punch, others are standing Hard Kick, etc. It's just needlessly confusing, and makes new players feel dumb for no great reason.

Yeah, I understand what you say perfectly, my man. It takes a whole 5 minutes to learn the launching move of any combination of three characters, it's just too much hassle for the Twitter generation and definitely prevents them from getting into versus fighters. It also removes that annoying, so called "character differentiation", and besides, it's obvious that not any attack button can be turned into a command normal by simply assigning a new move to a single directional input + attack button combination on the developer's end, hells NAW, only the brand fucking new Exchange Button® can do it (and besides, it doubles as a nice bullet point in the back cover ;D ).

I mean, really, we're witnessing how Capcom's getting us "maximum depth AND minimum complexity", they can twist videogame design in a way no other videogame company can. And let's not forget Street Fighter IV "kicks off a fighting game revival".

The visuals in this game are fabulous, all the details to give it a comic book feel and in particular the backgrounds are just superb. Miles ahead of the drab art direction presented in Street Fighter 4.

Two new characters:

Arthur: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nycc-10-marvel-vs/705874
Rad Spencer: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nycc-10-marvel-vs/705872

Could have done without the Dreadlocks Commando update but I'll take it.
