Monster Hunter 4 is vastly different from its predecessors as there is a stronger emphasis on platforming than before, walls can now be climbed more fluidly and in any direction, and for the first time Hunters can grab onto monsters and attack them. Environments shown also appear to be larger than before. The monsters in this game are also terrain aware and will use the environment to their advantage and the game will have a traveling base camp. Underwater battling will not be present. The game will have the most NPCs of any Monster Hunter game to date. The game will also have online multiplayer. Monster Hunter 4's director, Kaname Fujioka has stated the game will have a larger focus on adventure and story progression than previous Monster Hunter titles. As seen during the Capcom Summer Jam event, players are now able to attack whilst midair.

I'm glad to see Capcom focusing on making the world feel more like a real place instead of just a central hub from which you can accept your next quest. Hope this new focus also means we'll be getting more interesting and varied quests than before. Regardless, it still looks like it's shaping up to be the best Monster Hunter yet.

Adam Evanko wrote:About the new snake monster, Garara Ajara.

In today’s Famitsu they introduced the new snake monster Garara Ajara. The nickname is something like the ‘constricting snake wyvern’. It looks like a snake, but has short legs to move around with (think Lagicrus Sub).

Garara’s main thing is that it will circle the hunter and then constrict up like a boa constrictor, so I guess you need to make sure it’s not circling you and if it is, get the hell out of there. They do hint that although there appears to be no way out once it circles you that there is. My assumption is you can attack it’s neck/chest so that it frees up.

It can also go into the ground and pop up and snap at you. It uses it’s long tail like a whip to perform a single, powerful attack that has long reach.

The other main feature is that Garara has nerve poison in its teeth. If it snaps at you with them and lands a hit, you will instantly be paralyzed. At this point it will follow up and attack you.

The final cool thing about Garara is that it has hard scales that go up its body. Like a rattlesnake, it will vibrate them and send out a loud sound (shockwave) that will cause your hunter to crouch and hold their ears (like a scream), leaving you open to an attack. At times it will shoot off one of its scales, which will fly off and become planted into the ground. What this does is increase the range of the sound wave when it decides to use that attack.

Can't wait to fight this thing.

Monster Hunter 4 will be bringing back the Felyne equipment feature which was available in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for PSP in Japan. By visiting the blacksmith, you’ll get to make various equipment such as weapons, head gear and body armor for your Felynes. The headgear will give your Felyne characteristic traits on what type of monsters they’ll attack, such as small or large monsters.

We’ve already seen two of Monster Hunter 4’s towns—the trading commerce, Barubare, where many travelers and hunters around the world gather, and Naguri Village, a place that is surrounded by molting lava, ideal for any blacksmith. The third area is called Chico Village, and unlike the previous two, it’s a small and calm area surrounded by the sea.

The village elder is an old lady of the Wyvernian race. She spends her time happily living on the island with Felynes, who call her the “Cat Granny”. Chico Village rarely sees any visitors, and it is said that the only ones living there are the Felynes and the elder.

20130711_224239.jpg

The manager Felyne will be taking care of you on PocaPoca Island. The Felynes on the island seem troubled by a recent sighting of nearby large monsters, so they’ve been making efforts to find heroic Felynes. Their plan is to make the island a paradise that is flowing with Felynes of all kinds.

20130711_223355.jpg

For example, you can send out the “Mon Nyan” Felyne crew off on quests and they’ll return with items that are needed to make Felyne equipment. There are three different routes of near, normal and far quest routes, with the further quests being tougher but more rewarding. You’ll need to equip food for them, which has a maximum of three slots and depletes as they go on quests.

20130711_224017.jpg

The max amount of Felynes you can send on quests is five, and you’ll also have to take their skill types into consideration. For the first time, you’ll actually be participating in the Felyne quests by pressing the touch screen to activate their skills, however, you’ll also have to keep in mind which skills to use, as they can also back fire on you if not used properly.

20130711_224446.jpg

Finally, here’s a look at the new fishing machine that is available on PocaPoca Island. It requires Felynes and stock to use. It may seem easy to use, but it can be quite tricky, as the goal is to aim for an area that has more fish. If the fish move during the last second before you shoot, you’ll end up with a rather poor catch. There are also Felynes who specialize in fishing, making them a great boost for this feature.

The Insect Staff will have the ability to extract energy from monsters, and provide the Hunter with buffs. The type of extract varies according to the monsters and their body part you attack. The extracted energy comes in four different forms, each indicated by their own colors:

White: Mobility enhancement

Orange: Defense Up

Red: Attack Up

Green: Health Recovery

The latest update has revealed that in addition to being able to gain buffs from the extracts, you’ll also be able to mix them up and gain skills to go with the enhancement; for example, if you mix white and orange extracts together for the Insect Staff’s “Double Up” ability, you’ll get a Defense Up and also the useful “Earplug” ability, which grants immunity against roars.

There’s also a “Triple Up” ability, that allows you to mix three different extracts. Capcom haven’t revealed much more as of yet, but we’ll be seeing more of it in the near future.

The Insect Staff will come in a set with the staff and the attached insect, called Hunting Insect. The earlier footage of the weapon showed a beetle-like insect to go with the staff. The above image shows one that looks closer to a dragonfly. You’ll have access to other types of insects, as they can be enhanced and even evolve into new forms.

The Hunting Insects will come with their own stats such as power, stamina, speed, and all the elemental attributes. You’ll be able to gather specific foods from quests and fields, in order to enhance their stats and abilities.

20130725_005009.jpg (31.23 KiB) Viewed 19421 times

By continuously enhancing their stats, you’ll eventually meet certain conditions to level them up, further powering up your Insect Staff buddies. They can then evolve into different types of insects, such as the speed-type Garuuhel, and the power-type Zameel Beetle, shown in the above images.

Genel Sertas

In Monster Hunter 4’s latest trailer, we got a peek at a new scorpion-like monster. This monster has been revealed as the Genel Sertas. It uses its destructive tail-pinchers and tough legs to take out foes.

20130725_010005.jpg
20130725_010005.jpg (32.51 KiB) Viewed 19421 times

It doesn’t have wings to fly, but the Genel Sertas has the ability to release powerful pheromone gasses to attract neighboring Alceltas (the smaller insect monster shown above) and use them to fly. When they’re not flying together, they will still cooperate and attack the Hunters, so you’ll have to keep a close eye on both of them during battle.

20130725_010019.jpg
20130725_010019.jpg (33.46 KiB) Viewed 19421 times

When monsters lose stamina, they usually go out of their way to look for food on the field. Genel Sertas is a little different, as it rather consumes its new friend whenever hunter strikes.

Going over the countless screens posted in this thread, it's not an ugly game aesthetically. Given the technical limitations of the shitty engine and hardware it's running on, it's about as good looking as it can get, and some of the monster and area designs are pretty great. But the Nintendo tie-ins are shitty gimmicks that demolish the integrity of the world, and the screenshots posted to promote them are truly garish.
