As mentioned in Famitsu, Metal Slug 7 has been announced for the DS. No release dates or screenshots yet.

Both screenshots are from the bottom screen, so no idea what the top screen will be used for. Perhaps, refreshingly, for nothing.

Without some kind of noticeable improvements or changes, I think I'll stick with pulling out Metal Slug 3 once in awhile. Putting it out on the DS isn't doing much to get me excited either, but I'm not much of a handheld fan.

Yawn indeed. That series is so stale it's silly.

Funnily enough the last one I enjoyed was the GBA version. They introduced a few new tweaks like energy bars and reward cards. It went a long way towards making the game seem fresh and interesting again. Of course they've dropped these features for the new DS version..

I didn't keep up with the series after MS3, as they pretty much spent the next couple games reusing elements from the first three. I can't fault them too much for the two that were done while SNK was in bankruptcy limbo, but there's not much excuse at this point.

Did you get to play Metal Slug Anthology by any chance? I thought about grabbing it, but I've heard that they left out the arrange soundtracks from the NGCD versions of MS1 and MSX, and that there's some wonky control shit in MS3.

Metal Slug: 2nd Mission for the Neo Geo Pocket Color is my favorite of those outside the "main cannon" (1,2,x,3). It's really the only game that's gone out of its way to genuinely implement mechanical and stage designs that feel fresh, unique, and appropriate to the series. Ace game, it is. I recommend a check out if you have the means.

MS3 was without a doubt the best. But SNK is trying, MS5 was pretty darn good I thought. 4 Is the only one I played that I thought wasn't up to snuff but it still was pretty fun. I haven't tried 6 though I'm probably gonna pick up that Anthology thing.

Most of the complaints towards this series have to do with the reused sprites, from a game design standpoint they seem to be bringing in fresh idea's.

I really can't see why there's the continued love for Metal Slug 3? Stage 2 is utterly tedious, the flying/space sections are awful and the final stage is just one long irritating slog. One of the few arcade games I truly to believe to be just too damn hard.

The series just went downhill from Slug 1.

I really wasn't a fan of MS3's irritatingly long 5th mission, but I absolutely adore the Zombie/Extraterrestrial Mission 2. I'm surprised you're not a fan. I suppose the high (and varying) amount of damage Zombies require to take down is annoying. And the Yeti suck.

My favorite MS overall is MSX though. It had just the right mix of military and paranormal enemies and it felt more "twitch" than memorization (unlike 3+).

Sorry, my post seemed a bit a harsh. Slug 3 is far, far from being awful, it's just that this was the point where they should have started fixing problems with the game's system. Especially, allowing extends and not leaving the player stranded with a pea shooter after dying. Instead they made the game 10 x harder AND longer! :x

I've yet to play Slug X properly though.

Vergonzoso, para llevar este nombre, pero aún más que lo promocionen con "high quality 2D graphics".

A few comments on the original DS version, which I've played a little bit (see also hi-score thread: http://forum.insomnia.ac/viewtopic.php?t=2997). Note that I've only played the first three games in the series, and even those a long time ago and not very extensively, so I won't be making any sweeping comparisons.

It's a decent run 'n gun. Quite playable, despite the hardware. I am using a DSi, which has a pretty good d-pad, so I can't say I have any control problems. Of course my hands get cramped after a couple of hours, but that is to be expected.

There seem to be a couple of new moves that employ the shoulder buttons (and are hence quite awkward to pull off), and a multiplier-based scoring system, none of which I've tried to explore yet. Note that for all I know these features might not even be new -- I just don't remember them being in the first three games, but they could well be in later ones.

Difficulty is well-paced, so no complaints there at all. Apart from the fact that when you start a new game you get the option to immediately skip to any stage you've "unlocked" -- but this is easy enough to ignore. I've no idea what happens with scoring if you do skip ahead.

Graphically it really sucks. Sprites are small and flickery, backgrounds are a cheap mess and scroll jerkily all the time, and there are some cheap pixely explosion effects and the like. Contra 4 is a 2D masterpiece compared to this -- but this, no doubt, is the better game.

No idea what the bottom screen is supposed to be for. It shows an ugly pixelated map of the current stage, but unfortunately I do not have a second pair of eyes to look at it while playing. It might even be interactive in some way -- but again, I am not a mutant -- I only have two hands.

After looking at the preview screens and the promotional video of XX Recap linked, I see the following two lols:

-Graphics do not seem to be in any way improved

-Screen is pillarboxed

Note also that the DS's vertical res is 192 while the PSP's 272, so I can't see how they would be able to avoid some serious scaling. What a fucking mess this game has been. And I haven't even looked into the XBLA version.

It's rather odd, but the XBLA version has not been released, and there's virtually no trace of it anywhere. Only found this announcement on its release being delayed until sometime during 2010:

lolling at the Rev's retarded shenanigans:

Mischief Maker wrote:World of Stuart says that Metal Slug 7 is the best of the series because of the "metagame" which I interpret as the scoring system. He posted all over Eurogamer that his review was the definitive MS7 review, but that it's only for paying subscribers. I tried subscribing and he refused to give me access because I hadn't made 20 posts to his forum or some such silliness.

Could someone here explain what's so freaking amazing about Metal Slug 7's "metagame" that makes it the best of the series?

Enhasa wrote:Who would want to read, let alone pay, for a review by some asshat who doesn't even know what the word "metagame" means?

Oh I see, the metagame is trying to swindle as much money out of people as you can with a "professional games journalist" Metal Slug 7 review.

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 83#p525783

And some interesting comments on the game:

MathU wrote:I don't know what that clown is trying to say, but I think 7 is fantastic because it took the refreshing new mechanics (character-specific attributes, weapon management, and a meaningful scoring system) of 6 and adds a lot more content and some truly excellent bosses. The scoring system may be slightly simplistic, but it really adds a lot more replayability to the game. Plus, it's portable. I'm not sure it's the best in the series (though I will admit that by now I've probably spent more time on it than any other entry in the series--and I've single-credit cleared several), but I think it's without a doubt the best since 3.

Both XBLA and PSP versions internally render in a higher resolution than the DS version. The PSP version includes a few different scaling options, with 1:1 being one of them.

The XBLA release, amazingly, forces the use of some ugly HQ2X-style filter. I'm not sure if I want to deal with the ugly filter and use an arcade stick or play the game with cleaner visuals on my Vita.
