[AC] [PS2] Melty Blood: Actress Again

Unread postby icycalm » 06 Oct 2007 17:49

Enterbrain's upcoming Tougeki Tamashii Vol. 7 DVD (31/10) will feature a video from "MELTY BLOOD Act Cadenza 2(仮称)" -- the kanji in parenthesis meaning 'tentative title".

New arcade fighters are being announced left and right. Just like it was with shooters a few months ago...

Next up: 2D beat 'em ups!

if only :(

Final title will be Melty Blood: Actress Again lol. The Japanese are the only ones who can put a smile on my face just with a game's name, God bless them.

Isn't it one more GD? ;)

God bless their hearts for this.
I love MB and I usually play it a couple times a month on the Naomi cab.

Sega has stopped producing GD-ROMs. So all new Naomi games are coming out on carts. Dynamite Deka EX was on cart, and so will Mamonoro. As for Actress Again, If you check the first scan I posted you will see that the hardware is listed as "Naomi" and not "Naomi GD-ROM".

I wonder whether there will be any storage space issues with these games. But at least there will no loading times!

The Naomi 2 is dead, man. Has been dead for a long time. Like I said, the scan says "Naomi".

What's sad is that they are not going for high-res sprites. Every other franchise is going either high-res or 2.5D, but Ecole is sticking with the upscaled sprites.

This game would look totally awesome in high-res. The character designs are worlds better than those in Arcana Heart, and would really shine if the sprites were rendered in their native res -- either low or high. But the upscaling totally destroys their charm.

EXCELLENT!!!

On the non high res aspect
If it's not broken why fix right?

Why did the stop the GD releases?
I have only kept mine for GG:XX Slash, Melty Blood, and the greatest shooter in my eyes for the Naomi GD, Psyvariar 2 and of course Shikigami No Shiro 2.

But it is broken. The upscaled sprites are Melty Blood's only problem.

Beats me. I guess they had upkeep costs on the factory that produced them or some shit, and the economics of it did not work out anymore.

Sacrilege! Ikaruga is by far the best Naomi GD-ROM shooter, man ;)

More scans:

I am not sure which magazine this is. Some of the art assets and screens are the same as those in the Arcadia scans I posted above, but there are also several new screens scanned at a higher res, showing the character select screen and some cool action. Check it out.

This is all old news, but it's still quite relevant.

The next installment in the Melty Blood series will hit Japanese arcades in July. Entitled Melty Blood: Actress Again Current Code, it is an upgrade from the current arcade game that will incorporate changes made for last year's PS2 port of Actress Again, including the addition of two new characters, Ryougi Shiki and the seifuku version of Tohno Akiha, as well as numerous tweaks to move properties. Apparently there are further minor changes , but I am unable to read Japanese proficiently enough to list them. Also, as seen in videos from the loketest, the developers have made the attack and heat graphic effects slightly flashier; otherwise the graphics seem untouched from the previous version, which is a little disappointing but unsurprising for this series.

Here's a loketest video showing off the new characters as well as effects:

Other exciting news is that Current Code will be featured as a tournament at this year's Tougeki Super Battle Opera in Tokyo. It will be interesting to see if the Japanese players use the previously console-only characters in tournament play, as both characters have become relatively popular in the American tournament scene. In any case, Actress Again is a great game and a huge upgrade from Melty Blood: Act Cadenza. I'm glad the series is still going strong.

The website now has some screenshots up. Unfortunately, the game is applying an ugly filter over the sprites.

It's pretty minor, but annoying nonetheless.
