How many screenshots in a game review?

Unread postby icycalm » 18 May 2006 20:38

GameSpot has 440 pictures for their DC review of Code Veronica (it's true!). Are those enough for you?

Is there any reason a review should have more than one screenshot?

I believe the review should be equal parts pictures and words. This isn't a college textbook you're writing, and a cool screenshot is more memorable than a lazy paragraph any day.

I think there should be no screenshots in the review's text unless they are being directly referenced by the text. A separate page for screenshots is cool, and you can put as many in there as you want to.

My main issue with screenshots in game reviews is wether they're real ones. Most internet sites use those rendered ones, from non gameplay angles that aren't representative of how the game actually looks at all.

I think it's beautiful. I don't think I've seen nicer looking layout in any other website.

Annoying as hell. The text is too columnized, and the screenshots are way too big. That inverse colors part wreaks of snooty artsy fartsy bullshit, and the whole webpage is far too bright.

I've always thought this site was rather pretty. Screenshots are a little bit small perhaps but that's about the worst of it.

4-5 screenshots should be enough. My main concern is that most publications and websites
don't use in-game screenshots, but prerendered, replay screens (sports & racing), menu screens and other stuff. These reviews are like promotional flyers to me. Only in-game footage should be allowed.
