Initial D: Arcade Stage 8 Infinity will begin location tests around Japan’s arcades, with two on the 18th and 19th of January in Osaka and Tokyo.

(Note that this is an actual racer, and not the same as Initial D: Perfect Shift Online for 3DS.)

This latest version includes a new Factory mode and a D Coin function for purchasing special parts. For added fun, the LED lights for Infinity are also synced up to what happens while you drive.

I don't know a whole lot of Japanese, but enough to piece together that a "Roke Tesuto" (Loc Test) of Initial D Arcade Stage 8 was going on today. Having thoroughly enjoyed 2, 3, and 6 previously (along with a few plays of 7 earlier in the trip), I had to give it a shot.

The other posters inside and the official news release (http://initiald.sega.jp/ind7aax/news201401.html), it looked like they were showing off the following new features:
-- New Story Plot
-- D Coin (premium currency used in addition to the usual tuning points to buy parts, appearances, etc.)
-- Return of the Water Cup
-- "Make Iketani Faint" mode
-- Player Titles
-- Custom Tachometers

With the long lines and Stage 7 readily available elsewhere, I only raced 4 times. Thoughts are as follows:
-- Menu system and basic game structure almost entirely similar to 6/7
-- The story cutscenes looked a little better animated.
-- The turns now have little yellow or red HUD pop-up symbols as pictured.
-- Car tuning is about the same as before (but with the added option of purchasing with D Coin). They were kind enough to crank up the point earnings to where I completed Spec 3 after 4 races.
-- The cup of water appeared on the 3rd stage. I had to complete the stage within the time limit without spilling all the water. As far as I could tell, it only splashed out when you hit walls, so it wasn't too difficult. I made it with about 3/4 of the cup intact. It wasn't clear if the amount of water remaining was relevant or provided a bonus, but I did get the option to add it to my HUD from that point forward after completing the stage.
-- As for the physics, they feel like a slight improvement over version 7 with a somewhat lower steering sensitivity. Launching at the start had some more prominent wheelspin, so the 1-2 shift was a little more tricky. Turning too hard scrubs off speed pretty severely (though that might just be the low spec cars), and drifting successfully still provides a little extra acceleration on exit. Brake canceling still works as it did before in 6/7, but it felt like greater steering input was required to initiate the drift. I managed to nail at least one gold drift (near the end of the video).
