Big fan of this series from way back. The original Double Dragon was the first game I credit-fed in arcades all the way to the end (it wasn't cheap!) It's first runner-up to Insomnia's 1987 Game of the Year. I've been planning a VGART essay for years, but the review we already have on the site is an excellent introduction to it.

Yuke's is a Japanese developer of mostly wrestling games but also the PS2 follow-up to the Dreamcast Berserk that I liked a lot back in the day; still haven't played the sequel but Tim Rogers says it's good if that counts for anything. Given they don't have a background in belt-scrollers (unless you count their wrestling games as such, which is borderline), this doesn't seem like a bad effort at all. I see a sincere attempt to do some interesting things with the genre: lots of creative uses of depth, a bunch of platforming which is highly unusual if not unprecedented, strong character art, lots of moves. And because it's true 3D, smoother animation than Streets of Rage 4, though the latter still looks much better overall, and just way cooler. It also sounds cooler of course, with that godly soundtrack.

It's East versus West with Japanese franchises as the vehicles, basically. If I was still a full-time programmer gaming critic, I'd be all over it. Maybe some day I'll make the time for it.

Interesting tidbit: The English Steam page calls it "belt-scroll action" instead of PUNCHEMUP or whatever. Progress.

October 23 (Advanced Access October 22 with pre-purchase of Deluxe Edition).
