7. Battlemaster TutorialThere's a lot more to explain about how
Battlemaster works, I haven't even got into the Conquest mechanics I devised that turn Warhammer into Warhammer 2.0 like my
Ultimate Edition in general turns D&D into D&D 2.0. But before I get into all of that, let's just play the tutorial mission so players can see these mechanics in practice and how powerfully they can unfold the game's world in a persistent and massively-multiplayer manner.
So first off, head to the Warhammer 40,000 setting start screen:
https://akbattlegrounds.net/w/multivers ... e4a7ab639a
A few things to note:
- Always hit F11 to go full-screen with your browser when navigating Battlegrounds (might be a different key for different browsers).
- Starting from this release, Battlegrounds will be optimized for 4K resolution, so you might not be seeing exactly what I want you to see. To get an approximation of it, if you're running lower resolutions, you can zoom out with your browser; for 1080p the setting is 50%. It's probably not playable but at least you can get an idea of what I intended for you to see.
- The site isn't super-fast, let's put it this way, so be patient while stuff is loading. This is a known issue with Cult Engine 1.5 that's largely rectified in Cult Engine 2. Moreover CE2 adds lots of stuff like autoplay music, animation and video, and other cool stuff. Problem is it's not ideal for the overworld part of the game yet for various reasons, and that's why we're keeping that on 1.5. But we'll be playing Alien, Blade Runner et al. in CE2, and of course Warhammer in Cult Engine 3 which is completely next-level.
Right off the bat let me just say that what you're looking at is the coolest Warhammer start screen ever. Go ahead, google image search "warhammer 40,000 start screen" and see what you come up with. It's just an endless stream of halfwit programmer designs that completely misrepresent the game. What's worse, they all have subtitles to indicate that it's not really the game: it's a programmer's interpretation of it, which is of course always a minigame because that's all that programmers can make. The only Warhammer 40,000 game you'll find without a subtitle is mine.
And to rub this point in even further, I'll proclaim a contest! Find me a Warhammer start screen (doesn't need to be 40K) ANYWHERE NEAR as cool as mine (doesn't need to be exactly as cool since that's impossible, just in the ballpark will suffice), and I'll gift you the Leviathan boxed set that launched the 10th Edition in June 2023.

It was the very first product in the line, even before the rulebook was released (rules were put online so people could play), and it's long been out of stock as it was a limited run. Fetches a lot of money nowadays, but I'll give the digital version to the winner. It contains two armies to get you started, plus the very first mission in Season 10, which will be reserved for you, and which, if you win it (and remember, you only get one shot in my
Battlegrounds: no save/load or retries), you'll gain even more free units as a reward.

So, no one's gonna win this contest, it's impossible, but give it a try if you have nothing better to do, just to get an idea of how far ahead of everyone else my artistic talent is. You thought I could only write articles, right? Welcome to reality. The reality where I am also the uberartist.
My point is that I spent DAYS hunting down the three images that make up my start screen to get exactly the right range of action: from zoomed-in roleplaying (there are multiple 40K RPGs on top of the new CRPGs coming out now) to zoomed-out interstellar travel (think Battlefleet Gothic), plus close-range combat in the center of it all of course. And then I spent more time cropping and slightly rescaling the images to match my vision while preserving quality, etc. I put more thought and time in that start screen than any programmer has ever put into a whole GAME DESIGN. That's why I beat the shit out of them every single time without even really trying. They don't fucking THINK!
So I ask, wasn't all this effort—even for just the start screen—worth it for the very first and ultimate digital adaptation of the legendary Warhammer 40,000?
And of course I'll add music and animation and so on (I also need to upgrade the start button) when I move the overworld to CE2, which allows all this stuff. But if you want to hear the main theme right now, just click on PRESS START, which gets you right here:

The theme is right at the top. Have a listen. Then scroll down and read all the lore and hype, and watch all the little videos. That's the best primer for 40K as a setting and a game as you will ever get. It would never enter the head of a programmer to do this sort of thing. You can spend months playing dozens of their 40K minigames on Steam and still not learn half of the things this page will teach you. I recon there's a good half an hour of gameplay in all that! Plenty of gameplay for everyone so you can start playing right now! And just wait until there are 400 novels on the overworld lol. People don't yet realize that Cult Games games have not only the best gameplay but also the most! But they will realize it soon enough.
When you're done with the 40K landing page, click ENTER THE 41ST MILLENNIUM and prepare to be blown away:
https://akbattlegrounds.net/w/multivers ... edef4eca9b
That is the 40K galaxy at 10K resolution, so your connection/computer might struggle to display it. Moreover, even if you're on a 4K display, you'll be very zoomed in. On 1080p, forget about it. It's playable, but again you must zoom out with your browser to get a sense for what's where. Don't worry, you have all the time in the world: it's an online persistent universe. It's not going anywhere. And note that all this too is gameplay that you can play today!
Let's not even get into how I obtained this map. I could write an entire tutorial on it. The biggest version of it you'll find online is 2K. There is a 4K "version" but it's just the 2K upscaled, so it's crap. So how did Cult Games obtain a 10K version?
I extracted it from the official site. I spent a full day doing this, and then another day stitching the dozens of pieces together (because of course the programmers just had to cut it up into pieces before uploading it to their site, just in case anyone with dial-up modem tried to view it).
Even Lexicanum doesn't have higher than 2K, just look for yourselves:
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:9thEdMap.jpgNow why was it paramount that we obtain as high-quality a map as possible? This is why:

s3xyrandal wrote:This map is the culmination of a multi year effort cross referencing pretty much every map in every codex, supplement, and rulebook across all 9 editions.
And that doesn't include the 400 novels, comics, programmer minigames et al. lol. You can't place even a fraction of that data on a 2K map, and I plan to put ALL of it on there. Granted, there will be more maps unlocked when zooming into particular sections, but still, there will be hundreds if not thousands of points of interest on the overall galaxy map, and there's just no space for them on the smaller-quality versions, only on the 10K version on the official site. But of course you can't add content on the official site, you can only see the 10-20 POIs that the site designers put there, because their map is not a game, it's just a map. Look for yourselves, it's next to useless:
https://warhammer40000.com/the-settingIt's not even fun to scroll around it because, due to the programmers cutting it up into dozens of little pieces, the pieces keep appearing and disappearing as you scroll lol. It's just awful.
Anyway, the only cool thing about it is all the little themed icons, and don't worry, I am lifting all those off and sticking them in my game very soon.
So how do we start the action?
Look around the overworld until you find the little crossed swords icon in Segmentum Pacificus that is the only currently active point of interest, then click on it. You should be seeing something like this:

Depending on your resolution and display size, the mission text might be too small for comfort, so adjust the browser's zoom accordingly, or even better click on the "Read full article" button at the bottom, which will bring you to the full mission page:

And here you are: you've navigated to the very start of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Well, it's Season 10 at any rate. And why are we starting at 10? I'll explain soon, but just in case you're worried, don't be: you'll get the chance to play previous seasons if you want, in a flashback cinematic style. But first you must finish the entire Season 10, and that's a couple hundred missions across several campaigns/crusades, and more.
And it all starts with Battle Honours, which is the simplest 40K mission ever. I spent ages scouring half a terrabyte of data plus countless web links to ensure that I kicked off the setting in the fastest, easiest and simplest way available, and I found it in a 54-page pamphlet distributed at Warhammer stores to new players to teach them the basics of collecting, painting and playing. There were a couple earlier versions of the pamphlet from earlier editions that were far fewer pages and didn't feature a mission. This is the 2024 version that features a mission that's so simple that the Space Marine is even out of ammo so you can't use his ranged weapon! It's literally a 5-minute mission, but we'll spend more than that getting acquainted with the engine and so on. Plus, if you win you get to keep the unit and start your 40K army with it! So there's no need to own any units; any
Battlegrounds player is eligible, and all you have to do is click on "JOIN BATTLE" and start a mission thread in the brand-new
Battlemaster forum stating which side you're taking: Space Marines or Tyranids. Plus, you can also register a friend to play against you (but he must also be an active
Battlegrounds player). If you can't think of anyone, no worries, you'll square off against the dreaded
Cult Intelligence (CI)! I won't even be online for this, CI will log into Discord on its own account and join you in the voice channel to teach you the engine and the game, and then wipe the floor with you while laughing all the way! Plus, anyone can post in the thread at any time before the battle and take the other side, in which case you won't fight CI, so you might even get to win!
Note that if a player wins, he gets first dibs on the next mission, so he can keep chaining wins to rack up unlocks and rewards (units, minigames and so on) as long as he is winning. One could potentially one-life an entire campaign this way! Competition! FOMO! You can't do that on tabletop, and you sure as hell can't do it on Steam! It's just a teaser of what my Conquest mechanics are all about (not even the coolest aspect of it). More will be explained after the tutorial mission is over. So who's game?
P.S. If you're wondering which side to pick, here's a quick primer: Space Marines are the Space Marines in Alien 38,000 years in the future, and Tyranids are the xenomorphs in Alien 38,000 years in the future (they even have acid blood, but they have also evolved biological guns that fire goo lol). You can google and YouTube them, and there is content to peruse for as many hours as you have to spend, but you really don't need any more than that for this tutorial.
The Space Marines
The TyranidsP.P.S. Your choice doesn't lock you into a faction. It's just one unit, it means nothing. You can collect and play as many different factions as you want.
