CULT|shubn
@Star Citizens Jumping on.
My plans for today:

  • Get yesterday's loot to my home
  • Give gear to clone 11
  • Run Onyx storyline with clone 11 to get 15 ASD Secure Drives (+ loot)
  • Move my main to Nyx and make inventory of what I have for the Testudo Clanguard armor
  • Run Vanduul-Tech Smugglers to get more items for Clanguard armor
  • Help others grind InterSec rep if they want to
  • Try unverified courier contracts in Nyx

Taking a food break.
I'm back.
First 4 objectives completed.

CULT|icycalm
It really is getting that complicated now, to the point where if I log in without a plan I feel paralyzed with indecision of what to do lol.
And base-building isn't even in lol.
Nor crafting.
The monthly events give you some needed structure as the baseline/minimum of what you should be doing.

CULT|shubn
And we still only have 3 systems.

CULT|michael
The CULT Spec has helped keep me focused towards acquiring the gear I'll need to join the events, but even still, sometimes I finish a contract and I just sit out in space for a moment and think "Man, I could really do just about anything."

CULT|shubn
If I don't know what to do I just go looting.

CULT|icycalm
That makes a lot of sense. It's the SC equivalent of the "idle" genre, if you know what I mean: just pressing buttons to pass the time, but with the metaverse's benefit that the rewards are useful for all the other loops.

CULT|shubn
Well, looting at Hathor and Onyx is a bit more involved and dangerous than at the mining outposts, and that's what I'd been doing last patch.
But for the friendly DCs and mining outposts, sure.

CULT|icycalm
And CZs are even tougher so you get the full range of looting games from idle to Tarkov. And soon Rust with base raids.

What's crazy about this picture is that these aren't mere items, these are fully functional components like power plants and coolers that can be manually installed in numerous spacecraft to upgrade and customize them, or even traded with thousands of players across multiple planets and solar systems. Everything is fully physicalized and even photorealistic.

There's no other game that can produce such an image.

Fantastic work this year on the vids and equally fantastic work on the Issue Council, pushing those bug reports so more eyes can see them and pile on to push them to confirmed status. You are a huge asset to the SC community. Thanks from your fellow citizens.

Crazy how you can get this level of "cinematography" - as a player, without 3rd party software other than to do cuts or merges or fades or whatever. All in-engine with the in-game camera tools, then a touch of post-processing to put it together.

Inside Star Citizen | Alpha 4.6 Patch Report

I am putting this here instead of the event thread because it doesn't really have any event content. The main news is that the event updates will now be bimonthly instead of monthly. That's a huge mistake. The main reason funding jumped 33% last year was because people had new content to play every month, and thus reasons to buy stuff. 33% was an insane jump in funding, meaning they could afford to hire 33% more people, which is like 400 people at least, the size of several gaming studios! So hire some people and put them to work to ensure a new event every month! It's not rocket science! Instead, the very first event of the new year is one of the repetitive, grindy ones as opposed to a campaign-style narrative event, and it will last TWO months instead of one! They ended up increasing the duration of precisely the least popular content! If the rewards for it weren't great (and they truly are great) I would have stopped playing for two months!

The upshot with this slowdown in the past month is that I finally found the time to get Battlemaster off the ground, and if the slowdown lasts the entirety of 2026, so much the better for me, as it'll allow me to release Battlegrounds 1.0. So I really don't give a shit, and my players will have more free time to play my games over CR's too. Maybe they'll also spend more money in my game than in his lol.

Anyway, CR isn't a dummy and I am sure he'll figure out his mistake at some point. The question is how long it'll take him. I say by Easter he'll have got a clue, which is just about enough time for me to reach Battlegrounds 1.0.

The State of Star Citizen with Chris Roberts

Josh got to sit down with Chris Roberts of Cloud Imperium Games when he was in Sydney, Australia recently for Atmo Esports' Enter Atmosphere 2956 event.

A huge thanks to Chris for this candid chat!

All Star Citizen game footage courtesy of Cloud Imperium Games.

Nothing new in this interview, but I never get tired of seeing CR speak. He is the smartest of all the programmer game designers, by far. Of course just a baby compared to the RPG designers like James Jacobs. But hey, he can program! Not very well, of course. Which is why his games are great.

The other great thing about this video besides CR speaking is the sheer amount of video content cribbed from SC trailers. It reminded me of how much freakin' stuff there is to do in the game now, a far cry from what was available in '22 when we started playing, nearly four years ago! Back then we waited every month for a Dynamic/Global Event, and there were only four of them! Now there's so much stuff that we still aren't done with some of last year's missions like Align and Mine. Or maybe that's the only one we haven't finished? Not sure, need to look into it.

The upshot to this year's major updates being bimonthly is that we'll have plenty of time to complete any older content we haven't finished. So I look forward to that.

We have long tram rides and slow ass ship elevator animations versus "live, die, repeat" contested zones and other "theme park" events content. We have slow ass sit in chair animations versus your power plant is about to explode. We have the idea of "teleportation" thrown around yet hyper detailed physicalized ship components. We have CIG wanting players to take care of their "character" which can instantly be reprinted at a small vehicle. We have CIG releasing one "multi crew" ship after the other but those ships' defense turrets are so slow to follow, have such short range that a good pilot in a Hawk can blow you up over time. We have a CIG that wants all the sim aspects versus another CIG that wants COD/RUST in space. It does not mesh anymore and we desperately need someone to make CR either confirm his old overall pitch of the "living breathing universe" governed by 90% NPCs, or ditch it entirely for the crafting MMO.

This is all true and well put, but it's also very understandable if you realize that the metaverse is The Sum of All Genres. So of course he wants to integrate Rust with COD and Elite, and of course it aint easy. And to make matters worse he needs to govern 1,300 developers across 4 studios on 2 continents.

Complaining doesn't help. What helps is to realize that even if the integration never becomes smooth, it will still be more fun than any other real-time game ever, and there will still be no competition since no one else is even trying.

EquivalentLie7538 wrote:Why Star Citizen is completely alone at the top of the space genre (from a console onlooker)

Disclaimer: I have never played Star Citizen. I am a broke Xbox player who can't afford a mid-tier PC. But I have spent hours—literal hours—watching videos on this game, from in-depth ship reviews to the high-stakes gameplay of crazy, talented pilots. I love it the way you love a favorite book or movie.

After searching endlessly on console for anything that could match it, I realized the truth: Nothing touches Star Citizen. It is beautiful, amazing, and ultimately alone at the top.

My deep dive into other titles just proved to me how special Star Citizen's formula really is. Elite Dangerous hits 90% of the vibe, but it completely abandoned the console playerbase by locking us out of the Odyssey features, highlighting just how important Star Citizen's first-person physical universe actually is. Meanwhile, NMS feels basic in comparison because of its low player cap and inability to pilot large ships, and Space Engineers lacks the massive, living population and cinematic scale that makes Star Citizen feel alive. As for Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, I've never played, but the immediate turndown is that it's purely single-player; it could be your cup of tea, but it doesn't touch the previous three.

Star Citizen has created a seamless, high-stakes, multiplayer universe that no other developer has even come close to replicating. I just wanted to share some love for what this project has achieved, even if I can only watch it from the sidelines for now.

This is Admiral Foxe, of the 3rd Fleet, signing off in Elite Dangerous.

(P.S. This post is strictly composed for console. I'm aware of EVE Online and other titles. None of which are on console, specifically Xbox.)

Old-Buffalo-5151 wrote:Something I noticed people should keep in mind is SC has never been more popular, more people are playing now then ever before which means SIGNIFICANTLY more traffic to Reddit as people hit potholes.

People bitching means people are playing and that's the important context to remember.

My friend redownloaded SC last night when he watched me jump to Pyro while I was hauling, he thought it was the most epic shit ever lol and all I did was move boxes around.

kroko_26 wrote:Easy to understand the love in the initial post. OP only watched the game, did not play it ;)

That got a chuckle out of me.

SliceDouble wrote:I love X4 but it's more of empire-building simulation than space-sailing sim. At start, you sail your boat a lot but in later game you mostly manage your stations and fleets from your flagship bridge or manager's office at HQ.

Sure you can play it completely as a dogfighter from start to never-ending finish.

darkestbrew wrote:I hope you get to try it some day. Used to play ED too, but after trying out SC... Let's just say my Krait Phantom is still drifting somewhere out in the black.

I guess the game is just really that hard to make. AAA game studious are likely too risk-averse to make something like it. Without whales throwing money at CIG, SC probably couldn't exist.

hotwire90gaming wrote:I don't have answers. But I do have this. If you are stuck on console, Keep an eye on the new Steam Machine when it launches. Recent leaks indicate the price might be MUCH lower than previously expected. That will get you into PC gaming and playing SC.

Now that's what I call philanthropy.

Asmos159 wrote:A lot of people are constantly throwing temper tantrums because of what is required to achieve this.

There is no publisher in the world that would allow Star Citizen to have been developed. They would have shut down development for the larger tech, and pushed out a much smaller game.

2026 a great year for CIG's first proper release. What a year.

Buy an Odin or two to remember it by.
